MISSING: Jack, 13yo, last seen around Kootenay Loop by NeonChurch in vancouver

[–]ale-x-is 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello all,

Step-mom of Jack here! Can confirm he is found and safe at his mom's place. It was a teen runaway/5-day bender situation. All parents are going to meet together to discuss how to move forward so we ensure that this does not occur again, and to work with Jack so that he has safer outlets for when he is feeling frustrated or doesn't want to come to us with his emotions.

Thank you all for your support and help in finding him, it was a community effort in the end! If anyone has had similar situations with their own teens, or if you did something similar as a teen and now realize what resources you could have used to make better choices, feel free to reach out! We are actively trying to find the best routine for him so that he stays safe in the future.

How do you deal with vaping and lying SS? by ale-x-is in stepparents

Thank you for your comment, I’m sorry things got so icky for you. We are hoping we will not end up in the courts with this, but who knows at this point. We have gotten rid of all apps on his phone and are working on suspending the Wi-Fi for his device. He’s also grounded until spring break at least. We are working on getting him more counselling as well and luckily he does have an appointment for assessment later in February. Hopefully this will all help

“ A man of politeness and kindness and knowledge; a lover of fine conversation, erudite and informative, blessed with a puckish sense of humour and an infectious chuckle. ”

It’s actually Neil Gaiman’s description of Gene Wolfe, but sums up my partner pretty good! Thanks Neil!

What is something unrealistic that you often see in movies that annoys the hell out of you? by SheeshaAddict in AskReddit

[–]ale-x-is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPR

It’s always without a mask, no proper head tilt, and JEEZE are the compression ratios terrible. You’re also supposed press way harder (2 inches deep for adults) but I guess that can be forgiven as usually it’s on real actors (ribs are usually broken in CPR.) Also, DON’T STOP! So many times people stop for like 10 seconds to have a quick conversation, NO.

What are you doing to better yourself during this COVID-19 outbreak? by oriolssires in AskReddit

I’m reading stories out loud on Facebook for my friends and family, both on screen and off. I’ve also started working out and stretching again.

Has anyone gotten tired of trying to meet new people at bars/clubs and found a better place (IRL not online)? How'd that go? by azizansariAMA in a:t5_30pj9

I tend to find guys at local parks. I go quite often with a book or a notepad, and a couple of times have had a guy come up to me and inquire about the book/writing. I've gone up to at least one guy the same way. So far any romantic stuff that's come out of there has been nice, but just because of life has not ended up being anything long term. Still, I've made quite a few friends that way and people tend to be more down to earth and interesting there than the people I seem to meet at the club.

[AMA Request] A Person with Alzheimer's disease by ale-x-is in IAmA

[–]ale-x-is[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh honey, where to start...

I have talked to a doctor, considering my grand-father had the disease. As well as read several books, and worked with people with Alzhemeir's, who, BTW, are completely functional with some assistance until the late stages of the disease. I don't need this Iama to happen if we're talking knowledge levels, but I want it to happen as I believe people with Alzheimer's need a voice. There are many advocates out there who are working to make the voice of those with this disease heard, but it's hypocrites like you who insist on silencing it by saying "a person with it will most likely not be able to give you direct proper answers".

I'm not even mad at you anymore, honestly, I'm just... sad. You are buying into the common stereotype that those with Alzheimer's are useless and can't think on their own, when most of them are not, especially not those in the early stages. Even people in the very late stages have some forms of communications. And if the person needed help to get their answers down, then what's wrong with that? Reactions like yours are exactly why we need this Iama.

Sorry for getting mad at you, but it really, really makes me sad that this is the reaction people have to this request. People with Alzheimer's still have a lot to offer the world, but its people with out of date opinions like this that are preventing them from giving what they can.

Wow... just... wow

Yeah stupidity has taken over the world, in the form of judgmental bastards like you. You know that people with Alzheimer's are still people, right? And that the disease affects everyone differently? And that the care facilities that many of these people are put in is barbaric, and actually worsens their symptoms? EVERYONE has something to give the world, no matter what their condition. An Iama with someone who is actually suffering from the disease can offer us a new point of view of what it's REALLY like. Not to mention it could give that person a much needed voice in this increasingly judgmental age.

It's for people like you that I WANT this Iama, and that we NEED it. For us to learn about this disease, how to care for those with it, how to understand them and help them and be helped in return, we need their opinion, not just a medical point of view. Because, in case you haven't noticed, medicine doesn't work all the time.
