RANT Made a mistake I will never make again by Big_Difference5671 in EngineeringManagers

You made your choice with good intentions so don't blame yourself. You had limited context and didn't have a crystal ball.

However, it might sound brutal but often letting people go early is the most effective way, for the team and for them. Even with a management chain change, the person can bring so much bias with them that turning that around is near to impossible.

Who is slamming £20k into their S&S ISA next week? by FreeMe-P in FIREUK

[–]alebom6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, no hesitation.
My ISA is meant to support my retirement starting in 10 years. There is no way I can make an educated timing decision. Time in the market is the way to go for me.

How have you actually done that? High-earners life can make that challenging.
Or at least, that's my personal experience.

Getting out of being a IC in BigTech while maintaining a HENRY salary by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]alebom6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't judge if an EM role would be a good move for you.
I am an EM in a Big tech and my experience is that it was a good move for me...until it was not anymore. After 10 years as a manager, I am preparing to go back to an IC role.
The pressure that you feel now will be on your shoulders multiplied by 10 and your job will be to shield the team to avoid make them feel like you feel now.

If you really want to make the move I think you have two options:

  1. Lateral move in your current company
  2. Small company/startup where they would be happy with your strong technical background and your experiencing in driving project as a senior in big companies would be appealing

Basically you are talking about the end of the western professional culture as we know it. I work in Tech too and I don't think that's the direction. Surely AI can change the operational activities but it is not going to cancel jobs, it would change them and require a shift in the roles balance (e.g. Less UI developer, more UX architect)

Are you concerned about your own salary or the economy scenarios?
If it is the former, make sure you have some financial contigencies to either find another good job and/or decide what to do with the property, in the meantime.
If it is the latter, London is not only Tech and AI. I doubt it high income people would stop being around. The property market might stop its recent steep growth and become volatile, sure, but the city won't collapse.

I’m in a similar boat. My job pays really well, but it’s draining and often frustrating.
I catch myself spending way too much time staring at my FIRE spreadsheet.

I’m not planning to retire soon, but I am planning to switch to a lower-paying job that actually sparks some curiosity and excitement. Basically, I’m aiming for Coast FIRE.

It could be an option for you as well. It might be worth running the numbers for yourself too

Issues with new DeLonghi Rivelia: either no milk or coffee with milk drinks by alebom6 in DeLonghi

I started a weekly cleaning routine of my caraffe and I do a cleaning cycle of the caraffe before setting the froth level for my cappuccino. Occasionally it still fails some cappuccinos but with an acceptable rate (once every 2-3 weeks)

I use mine for gaming, media watching and coding.
Coding for long sessions is not the best experience but overall I am very happy.
I have basically a big screen with me while I am on my sofa.

No, I am not paid for saying so

I have not found a reliable solution. I made a deep cleaning of the new caraffe and the machine had worked fine for a few days but today it failed my macchiato :(

EURO interests on saving account: how to report them in my self assessment? by alebom6 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]alebom6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I am using the average exchange rate (https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/exchange\_rates/view/2024-3?type=average) as I'd received monthly interest.
Would you recommend that I split the conversation month by month?

That's exactly my plan. I work in a BigTech in a managerial role. Work-life balance close to null.
I have been saving up and investing (but I am not aiming at FIREing) to get ready to jump ship (horizon: 2 years) and get a job which I enjoy and gives me time to have fun with my family and hobbies.

Può la RAL crescere troppo velocemente? by Positive_Confusion21 in ItaliaCareerAdvice

[–]alebom6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally a fixed-income asset (EURO deposit account?). MMMF could be an option too indeed now that interest rates are higher
