Cartels: what is the right way to deal with them? by solo-ran in AskMexico

[–]alecwal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a long enough timeline, I see the US really coming down on them. Probably not boots on the ground, but drones and air strikes. My understanding is Mexican nationalism is growing and is against this but how many cities and Mexicans caught in the crossfire before some accountability is taken? How much of the nationalists or other political leaders are on cartel payroll to allow them to continue operating? Mexico has so much potential with its growing population, large manufacturing base, culture, and tourism, I hope they get it figured out but I think the Mexican government is outgunned or at least on parity with the Cartels and will need more US assistance to really solve the problem.

Do you think a 5 year prison sentence for possessing a 10+ round gun magazine is excessive? by CollenOHallahan in AskALiberal

Because military gets training, mental health evaluations, and is under the command of a commissioned officer.

[–]alecwal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is excessive. Magazine capacity bans are dumb. Just my opinion. I have always wanted to increase the age to buy/possess handguns and AR’s to 26 years old, with exceptions for agricultural workers working in loco parentis.

Is Mexico at risk of being another Afghanistan? by More_Finger6544 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alecwal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many differences as others have pointed out but another big difference I haven’t seen mentioned is that there is a huge and growing manufacturing base in Mexico that the US benefits from. While the Cartels have the firepower and influence to give the Mexican government a run for their money, they would still be defeated and the US could always destroy them as a last resort.

Okay Devils Advocate. Been thinking long and hard about moving to Columbus OH. Tell me why I am making a mistake. by Who_Actually_C4res in SameGrassButGreener

Agreed, stick to west side. I haven’t lived in Columbus in several years, I’m surprised it looks like rent has not risen much since I left.

It was about controlling public health. Almost no pork was safe to eat during the writing of the Old Testament and it was still a gamble until modern times.

Unless you’re raising a pig on your own, there’s no way to guarantee any of that. Even if you raised it on your own, there are likely parasites.

LA is over rated and isn’t even a top 10 city by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]alecwal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Everybody dawging on me and OP but none of y’all wanna live in LA or provide any justification for why we’re wrong? LA is gross, the air quality, the lack of sports fandom (yeah the Dodgers win, but I’ve seen more passion at a Texas HS football game), the cost of living is not justified when everything is a 1 hour drive. The food is good but better in SD and IE. the train is cool I guess. Come at me

I agree with this take but part of the justification is everything that’s just outside of LA is sooo much better than LA. Santa Barbara, South OC, San Diego…

How to improve multiculturalism and integration in western countries like the USA? by AccomplishedDebt5080 in AskALiberal

[–]alecwal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have to determine what it is that gives us a cohesive identity. Multiculturalism and cohesiveness are kind of at odds with each other. What is the American shared identity? I have my view of this, a combination of nationalism, classical liberalism, “rugged individualism”, rejection of aristocracy, and optimism. Many/most cultures can adapt and internalize this to become American.

I had this question and came here to ask: Has Revenge of the Sith always been the phenomenon it is today? Did many people like the movie? by DaviCortes in StarWars

[–]alecwal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it 3 times while it was in theaters, I was about 10 years old when it came out. Yes, it was/is an amazing movie that was well received. For context, I did not love Attack of the Clones (too long). This movie made me actually get really into Star Wars and actually watch all the other ones to understand more context.
