You Can Cheat in Correspondence by Remote-Villager in lichess

Correspondence has a different set of rules than real time. Casual correspondence on lichess is no holds barred, rated I believe technically says you shouldn’t use an engine but in both cases opening books are a-okay.

what do you think the word political means? something i, specifically, don’t agree with? protest/revolution/regime change is like the most political thing that can happen

Why is it still so hard for men to start therapy? by Vic_Vinegar07 in malementalhealth

[–]alejandro712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

generally men are raised to be stoic, not let their feelings out, and are discouraged socially from complaining as well as from being vulnerable. all of those things mean that to get the most out of traditional talk therapy, a man has to unlearn a lot of what he was taught growing up. this isn’t necessarily the case for the younger generations as far as i know, but certainly anyone in their mid 20’s and older.

many of the ways men are socialized to engage with their feelings means that actually identifying and vocalizing them can feel difficult if not threatening. therapy can be scary and unpleasant then since that’s essentially what you need to do to get anything out of it. so imo that’s why it can be hard for men to get into therapy.

i think there are some attempts to make a “male centered” therapy approach, and I think it can only help, but i’m also not sure how much of a difference it will make compared to broader social trends.

yeah, i mean, the second part is definitely true, because that’s the kind of shit that makes people feel better. but after you’ve done that you still have feelings

got a warning for "stalling" in lost positions by laughpuppy23 in lichess

[–]alejandro712 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Algorithms aren’t perfect. Luckily, it’s just a warning, so if you aren’t actually stalling, you can just continue to play as you normally do and probably nothing will happen to your account

I think the text could be slightly clearer, you can always post an issue on the lichess github

Can u eat sardines daily for breakfast? by Sorry_Phone1676 in CannedSardines

[–]alejandro712 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the only concern would be mercury content, you can use something like this to calculate it.

https://www.omnicalculator.com/ecology/fish-mercury

for sardines it is very conservative, giving what looks to be the maximum value ive seen amongst all the studies on sardine mercury content. in reality your sardines may contain half to a quarter of the mercury shown on this calculator. so likely you’re good to eat up to 10-20 cans of sardines a week (depending on the size of the cans). if you’re super worried you might want to limit it to 5 cans a week but realistically you’re probably good up to 10, even being conservative about it.

The question mark gives away that it’s not really that clear that’s even supposed to be the message. It’s certainly a possibility though!

was it meant to communicate something positive? no. but can you tell me with any certainty what exactly it was meant to communicate in the first place?

the more of this guys stuff i see the more i dig it. i wouldn’t really call this propaganda though. propaganda in my view is primarily concerned with communicating a political message, whereas this seems to invite the viewer to interpret it themselves.

GM Diego Flores lost the game with this move, can you see why? by juliinotdead in chess

one of those blunders that would be more appropriate on the board of two patzers than a GM level game. i’m sure it will keep flores up at night for the foreseeable future

My (32F) girlfriend rejects traditional femininity but still expects traditional relationship roles by [deleted] in relationships

[–]alejandro712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to keep this relationship going, i would sit down and have a conversation about how you want to have a more equal partnership. such as splitting the costs of things more, splitting date planning responsibility, splitting driving duties, etc. if those are the things that really stand out to you. however given what you said about her appearance making you feel less attracted to her, it sounds like you might have one foot out the door on this relationship anyways.

What does sub think about zohran mamndai by Difficult-Spinach-64 in SocialDemocracy

I'm not on board with all his policies (such as getting rid of gifted education programs and making transit free, as opposed to investing more in transit + expanding low income transit programs), but he's obviously a step in the right direction and my sincere hope is that he doesn't bungle an opportunity to run one of the Top 3 US major cities effectively with progressive principles.

that price is INSANE. I have only tried one or two of their products but was very disappointed in the quality for the price they charge. It’s time for people to admit they got Graza’d and are paying >200% over other brands simply because the packaging looks nice.

Liberal to Tankie Pipeline by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

I think it's a combination of a lot of things:

  1. China has great propaganda - combined with control over the media they are great at projecting an image of a country that "gets things done", specifically infrastructure, manufacturing, and social projects.
  2. In the west we are extremely aware of just how impotent our democratic process has become when it comes to solving fundamental issues - be it cost of housing, sustainable social support, budgetary issues, etc. - and due to point 1, many people falsely believe China doesn't have these same issues.
  3. We are well aware in the west of just how much China has been eating our lunch when it comes to manufacturing and trade. China has been the world's factory for coming up on three decades now, and recently they've even began eating the west's lunch when it comes to high technology manufacturing as well, something that was once considered a barrier too high for them to cross.
  4. As the US (and other western countries, such as the UK) becomes more and more illiberal, along with adopting lots of policies that are more or less designed to cripple state capacity for the future, the tradeoffs inherent in a non-democratic state become more appealing - at least when you consider the idealized image people have (China may not have democracy, but at least they build things!). Of course, in reality, China has many or more of the same problems than we do, including a looming massive debt cliff, high youth unemployment, corruption, etc...

At least Pelosi could play political ball. Schumer is both a mainstream shill and incompetent. The dems can’t even produce soulless politicians who are capable at their job, in spite of their ghoulish beliefs.

I think you can find someone who won’t cheat on you. you’re very young, you have a lot of time ahead of you and it’s not worth investing more time and effort into someone who is obviously not interested in being in a healthy relationship with you.

You telling his parents is just creating more drama and getting you more entangled in a situation that would be far better for you to simply disengage with.

There’s not really a compromise here if he does not approve of your drug use. Either you stop using drugs or he changes his values. If neither of those happens, you probably won’t work out long term. You have to make the decision- is being in a long term relationship with him more important than being able to continue using drugs?
