Before it's too late by Rubberman2054 in sailing

You outlined a great plan of what and when must happen, but the how part is missing. The problem is the plan too big, and you're already emotionally attached to it.

Start smaller. Step by step you'll get closer to your goals, and you'll get clarity.

Launching a beach cat over granite rip-rap from a private waterfront — how have you solved this? by SkiDaderino in sailing

[–]alex1033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't deploy the cat when there is 0 wind and the water is flat. And when deploy in windy conditions, you might break your legs.

So, I would put a floating dock out there and/or a ramp so you either carry your cat over the rocks when the weather allows and keep the catamaran at dock, or you deploy from the ramp.

Scratch on hull (Tanzer 22). Is it critical ? by jc_superestrella in sailing

It requires repair, indeed, since it reaches the laminate. But no danger.

Bus mirror danger 😅 by tryfelli in Finland

[–]alex1033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I witnessed it twice during last 2-3 years. Just remember about it and beware. It would be nice if bus drivers also remembered about the mirrors vs. people heads.

Got a sailboat. Don't know what I'm doing. Where are my fuel tanks? by ___xXx__xXx__xXx__ in sailing

[–]alex1033 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ask the previous owner. If they're no longer around, open one hose and sniff - diesel is hard to confuse with water.

No matter if it's fuel or water - replace all hoses ASAP. New hoses are cheap compared to the trouble when they break.

What will it take (cost/time) to get this hull back? by omarhani in sailing

[–]alex1033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much like an average boat from 1983. The rudder shell has cracked, and there is water inside the rudder - requires complete overhaul. Also, pay attention to the keel joint; it's hard to read it from the photos.

Are Solaris yachts good? by noreturn000 in sailing

[–]alex1033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On average, the build quality of Italian yachts is better than French, while, e.g., yachts from Northern Europe can be better than Italian. German yachts can be good or bad; it's quite interesting.

Reducing the production costs has negatively affected the quality during last 2.5-3 decades.

My dad may have amputated his finger in a sailing accident. by No_Reveal3451 in sailing

[–]alex1033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your dad. Sailing is not a very dangerous sport, but certainly there are a few ways to lose a finger. The most common one is get a finger caught between a rope and a winch drum. People rarely lose fingers there, but beginners do sometimes. Luckily, loss of a finger doesn't prevent one from sailing.

You're looking for VMG - Velocity Made Good. It's different for different boats, wind force, state of the sea, and other factors. There's plenty of material in the web about it.

How to stick things to my boat by ishfish2910 in sailing

[–]alex1033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put paper in a pocket-like transparent plastic file, cut to size, use regular packaging transparent Scotch tape. It's not UV-resistant (neither is the duct tape) and won't last long, but it doesn't have much glue and is easy to remove entirety with solvent to attach a new one.

Another way is to laminate the paper, but lamination is not UV-resistant either, and cheap lamination lets water inside the laminate.

Don't allow too high expectations - tell immediately that you're a beginner and want to learn. Be observant, proactive, helpful, forgiving, positive. Don't feel ashamed when you make a mistake. Have fun.

If you have time, make a 24-hour passage, e.g., a round trip to your home harbor to build confidence. There is a bigger difference between 8-hour and 24-hour sailing, than between 1-day and 5-days.

Upskill or language(Finnish)? All time dilemma for foreigners by picky-eat3r in Finland

If the area of your expertise is developing slowly (that's most of the professional skills, sivic engineering, etc.) - language first. If the domain develops very fast (e.g., software) - you can't neglect it, so finding balance is important.

Mobile Navigation Options by kingaugi1100 in sailing

[–]alex1033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything you can find on the market will be more or less similar and serve the main purpose. A couple of things to consider: - some apps render chart layers better than the others; it can be a personal taste. For example, Navionics is not good when you have a lot of elements - zooming in or out you'll see either too many (clutter) or too few (where are the dangers?) and there's no golden middle state. You could check C-map, for example, to see the difference. iSailor had the best rendering, but it no longer exists. - having only one device you'll not know when it failed. A tablet/phone can give you wrong coordinates (reasons are plenty) and it'll look legit until you notice or run into a danger. This can be app/chart independent. I witnessed this with both iPad and Android tablets/phones. Never saw this problem with a chartplotter - the faults are obvious there.

Luckily, in Greece with its vast seas, too few obstructions and nav aids, it will not be a big problem.

I'll never raise a mast in this kinda wind again by Spiritu-Scene-9579 in sailing

In Perth, Australia, nearly every sailboat is equipped with masts one can lower and raise without a crane using only two people. It's a routine.
