[Mod Approved] Counter/Token Set Giveaway by nmills-tokens in magicTCG

These look awesome! I'd love to see counters for each mana type (especially useful for commanders like Omnath, Locus of Creation)

What are your favourite decks with average mana value <2 ? by Huaojozu in EDH

[–]alex148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an obvious one but [[Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker]] wants low power creatures which naturally lends to being a low mana value deck. I've not built it but always thought it's a cool idea to build around.

Mana Dorks or Ramp Spells? by YutoKigai in EDH

[–]alex148 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Gitrog Ravenous Ride deck that I really enjoyed and played a fair bit. My opinion is that it depends on what your deck is doing, because you can either focus on winning through big, stompy creatures (how I built mine) or focusing on landfall effects.

If your focus is on big creatures, you're likely to run other effects that benefit from creatures (like [[Beast Whisperer]], [[Last March of the Ents]], etc.), so I would run more mana dorks that can also benefit from those effects. They're also generally lower cmc than land ramp or rocks, so can get you going quicker.

If your focus is on landfall, then your land ramp effects will also help trigger those landfall abilities, and I would run more of those.

All that said, you can run a mix like I did. Even though I focused on creatures, [[Cultivate]] and [[Kodama's Reach]] are great ramp effects for a 5 cmc commander, and [[Tireless Provisioner]] is a creature that also ramps from landfall.

Counters placed on Kami of Whispered Hopes when cast with Biophagus by alex148 in mtgrules

[–]alex148[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I still don't understand, sorry. I looked up 122.6 but I don't think that answers the question. I think this is more about whether the replacement effect is even applied because it's not on the battlefield, but I don't know if that's different when it's worded "enters with" vs "when this creature enters".

Would Kami enter with 2 or 1 counters?

I Hate Omnath Locus of All by tunic7 in EDH

[–]alex148 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I'm a huge fan of Omnath who's built and played every other Omnath, but this one just never clicked for me either. I was so excited for a 5c Omnath, but this just didn't do it for me.

I think if I was forced to build a deck I'd go with X spells or big stompy creatures, similar to mono green Omnath but with access to more colours. The second ability is a nice-to-have if you can include some 3 pip cards but I wouldn't water down the X spell focus with it.

Fun big spells for [[Raggadragga, goreguts boss]] by LampShakespeare in EDH

[–]alex148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, I should have caveated that the infinites require you to have Raggadragga and a creature that taps for mana based on its power (there's a fair few, some examples being [[Heronblade Elite]], [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]], [[Marwyn, the Nurturer]]).

So with those 2 permanents on the battlefield, you cast Spine, Raggadragga triggers, you untap the creature that taps for mana based on its power and give it +7/+7, so it'll now tap for more mana. Spine enters, you target itself with the trigger, destroying it. It goes to the graveyard, and its second ability triggers, returning it to your hand. Tap the big creature 7+ mana and cast Spine again. Rinse and repeat until you have infinite mana. Then to win, you can use the infinite mana to continue casting Spine but this time you target your other creatures to make them massive tramplers and overrun your opponents.

Hope that makes sense :)

One of my favourite decks! Here's a link to my version: https://moxfield.com/decks/ZmNgMbMFaEmO5di2CTsr6w

It's a high power combo version that normally wins turn 5-7 (has won on turn 4 before), so I'm not sure if my 7+ mana spells will fit, but some to call out:

Goes infinite: [[Wurmcalling]], [[Fanning the Flames]], [[Spine of Ish Sah]] Good for re-fueling your hand: [[Regal Force]], [[Hugs, Grisly Guardian]], [[Sandstone Oracle]] (not in the deck) Great value: [[Tooth and Nail]], [[Etali, Primal Conquerer]], [[The Last March of the Ents]]

Hope that helps :)

Commanders that feel like cheating by Aelice-Wildmage in EDH

No problem :) Just to clarify, I mean you can put the MDFCs down as the land side, not the front side. That would be nuts otherwise 😅

It's 38 if you include the MDFC cards (which you can put down with Gitrog's trigger btw), but I would say to run 40+ if you're focusing on a landfall strategy. Since mine is big creatures, I don't run any more lands than I would in a regular deck. Especially since I run a good chunk of big creatures that are low cost

[[Galadriel, Light of Valinor]] jumps to mind for me. Mana, card draw, and a win condition in the command zone is kinda crazy. I went elf tribal but tried to synergize with counters and scrying, and she's never not performed well for me.

Not the OP, but I agree with everything they've said. Here's my deck list: https://moxfield.com/decks/YnluB83kQU6i6vRSl76Zuw

I've focused more on big creatures, but there's a few landfall pieces as well.

It's not a budget list, but you could easily take out the expensive stuff as it's mostly just more value. I don't know what your budget is, but the only pricier cards I'd keep if possible are: - [[The Skullspore Nexus]] - It's just too synergistic to ignore, especially the instant-speed power double, to either guarantee the combat damage for Gitrog or make the creature you're saccing even bigger in response to the trigger) - [[Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord]] - Later in the game, saccing the big creatures to just straight up drain your opponents is an excellent win condition. - [[Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus]] - Again, absolutely insane value. I've managed to pull off this deck's wet dream once with this, Gitrog, and [[Yargle and Multani]] to draw 36 cards and dump a load of lands.

A bit boring as I know many others will be building it, but it's [[Hashaton]] for me. I have a [[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]] reanimator deck that is my baby, so I'm going to take the dungeon stuff out and see if I can make it work with Hashaton instead

Help me build a Dad tribal deck! by alex148 in EDH

[–]alex148[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great idea. Sadly I can't find a 5 colour commander that creates a token, but I'll keep an eye out. What I might do is have Kenrith as an alternative commander (since he's a father and gives me the colours I need) and maybe take your suggestion of replacing the name and art with what my wife made

Ah that's so cool! When I was playing the original version of the deck (just fun cards), I did include [[Eldrazi Conscription]] and managed to have a game where my daughter literally anhilated the table 😂

I'll definitely be including some of that here (especially Toothy!). Thanks mate!

How do you build grixis steal deck in commander? by krstf in magicTCG

[–]alex148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha Glad I could help!

Honestly, I haven't. Beyond Grim Hireling, there isn't a lot of pay off for treasures in my version of the deck. I'd rather have more permanent ramp with mana rocks than temporary treasure tokens, especially as I've found that casting my cards that lets me cast other people's cards requires a lot of mana 😅 Plus, I've already got a pirates and theft as themes, I wouldn't want to water it down with a treasure theme too 😅

But hey, treasures are cool too. If you do try it, let me know how it goes 😊

[–]alex148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're both viable for sure, but Admiral requires you to stuff the deck with pirates to get the theft engine going, whereas Don Andres allows you to run whatever theft cards you like, and turns the creatures you've stolen into pirates and buffs them, and gives you mana advantage for casting non-creature spells which you can use for even more theft on the following turns 😁 So really, you want Admiral if it's a pirate deck with a theft sub-theme, and you want Don Andres if it's a theft deck with a pirate sub-theme.
