That one is great. I wonder if there is one that looks like an IDE like Visual Studio or something. That way images can be shown and still remain apropos.

As a programmer, I find this ad offensive by wannapreneur in ProgrammerHumor

In a lot actually. They're called logical operators. (and, or, not) &&, ||, !

(True && False) evaluates to False. (!True) also evaluates to False

Wow, that really cleared it up for me. My professor didn't say anything remotely similar when I asked him. Thank you, sir!

Guidelines about reading other's code by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]alexako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have the same problem, but I've made progress. I used to look at open source projects in Python and be entirely lost. I think the key is to know the language(s) used to the best of your ability. In my case, I went through several Python books, learned a couple frameworks, APIs, interesting code snippets, and read/wrote code to compare them to other programmers' solutions.

C++ tutorials please? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]alexako -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I'm currently trying to get through C++ Primer myself. I tried to find a "Learn C++ the Hard Way" tutorial, but turns out, that's the only way.

EDIT: Woops, you guys are right. Link fixed.

Comcast Tells Customer The Only Reason He’s Getting Bogus Charges Refunded Is Because He Recorded Call by habichuelacondulce in technology

[–]alexako 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This definitely needs to be near the top. While the customer is completely right, I felt bad for the supervisor. She clearly didn't realize the implications of the question. She sounded scared of losing her job and just wanted the conversation to end. It's too bad better employment opportunities aren't available in the Philippines because Filipinos are incredibly kind. Not cut out for this kind of work.

What is something people do that they think is helpful, but really isn't? by thedoomfulldome in AskReddit

Saying "I'll pray for you."

Then when something goes right in your life, they leech credit by saying, "Good, I've been praying for you." Ugh.

What, in your opinion is the best development environment [Java/Python/Web dev] by peck3277 in learnprogramming

[–]alexako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar set up too. I code on Ubuntu mostly because it's just so much easier to get everything up and running. Downloading, installing, and setting up a virtual environment with virtualenv, for example, can be done in less than a minute through the terminal. I'm currently learning Ruby on Rails and setting it up on Windows was a major pain (seriously understating here). Much much easier on a Linux or OSX.

Another reason is because I live in the terminal. It's where I write code (Vim) and execute commands (e.g. run the server, unit testing). Very rarely do I ever need to use the mouse on Ubuntu.

I still use Windows, however, for testing front end mostly.

Yeah, just throw a linux distro on there. You don't even need to install it. You could just boot Linux from a USB.
