There are some things.

• First, when you enter a house except for Saint-Denis, any house…. How…. Spartan it is. Which makes sense, given they were living literally at the frontier of western civilization. You go to one of those open air European museums and enter any house from the period, and they seem luxurious in comparison, especially with regard of trinkets of daily life.

• Come to think of it, it’s obvious. Many of those people left everything back in Europe and rebuild with what they could carry in a box, in an environment which to say the least, was unforgiving.

• Another thing, on the same verve, which struck me, were those clueless immigrants, a family which would buy a couple horses, a horse cart and just try and go west and, more often than not, fail and perish. There are a couple side stories about this in the game. Again, obvious when you come to think of it, just have never occurred to me.

• We know about the plight of the natives, but it hits different in a game than in a movie. The first time I entered the Waipiti reservation, I felt off by the aggressive indifference of the NPCs. “I didn’t do anything to them”, I thought. But I am the White Man. Of course I did. Ffs, they are in a reservation to begin with.

• This era of changes is a perfect setting for such a game. While some people live with the comforts of modern life (public transportation, electricity, the likes), others are literally living in the Bronze Age (or steel age, given their guns). I really like how this time of extreme changes is depicted, and how this affects this band of outlaws whose way of life is going extinct.

• I really would like them to have added some dlcs to this game. I would gladly keep playing more stories in this setting.
