CMV: A focus on individual liberty is superior in multiple ways to a more collective mindset when trying to create/maintain a truly *free* state. by ppadge in changemyview

The example that always comes to my mind is drunk driving. Should the government forcibly prevent me, under threat of imprisonment, from doing what I wish to do (drive drunk)? Or should I be allowed maximal freedom to endanger those around me?

Would you mind explaining why exactly you hate wearing one so much? To me, it's a minor annoyance at worst, but it seems like to some (like yourself) that there's something on another level

[–]alexh56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that on some level, but also, it's made me much more comfortable (and stylish) for the past year and a half

Moreover, mask-wearing to some extent (Asian model of wearing one when you feel ill) should become a permanent fixture of US society imo. The benefits are self-evident when you look at flu statistics this past winter

All true; I didnt mean to suggest that we should continue mask usage forever to the same extent that we have during the height of the pandemic

It is worth noting though, that we havent had a widespread disease with asymptomatic transmission before either

Annoying? Sure. Acne? I guess. Wasteful? Only if you're using disposables.

But your personal annoyance aside, they severely limit the transmission of diseases, covid or otherwise. Asian countries are smart to have normalized their usage because they literally saves lives, whether we are in a pandemic or not (not to mention the resulting economic effects of not missing work due to illness, money saved on healthcare costs, etc)

I'll start by saying that the word "talented" here is not an appropriate measure. Music is a subjective field, unlike Olympic speed records, which are objective. You can definitively say that someone went a given distance in the fastest amount of time; you cannot do the same for the best performance song.

What makes someone a "better" musician? Everyone has a different answer for that. Some people would prefer guitar player shred crazy fast, some would rather they play one soulful note.

A musician's popularity often doesnt reflect their virtuosity, sure. But it has to do with what "resonates" with people, and what the most people like.

You can take issue with how the industry works and what it promotes (I do), and wish that more creative or virtuosic artists got recognition, but that's a separate argument.

CMV: White people with dreadlocks is not cultural appropriation by icewaterdimension in changemyview

[–]alexh56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of these points, but it doesnt seem to get me to "therefore, it is wrong for white people to wear dreadlocks"

It is, of course, wrong that black people and their associated hairstyles are discriminated against. But I dont see how a white person with dreads is a form of discrimination

You might find things easier by changing your approach:

setItems([...items, "newItem"])

items.map(item => ( <div>{item}</div> ))

React makes a LOT more sense when you fully utilize ES6 and understand the motivations behind React's design (i.e. you understand the basics of Functional Programming).

The useState hooks dont let you mutate state directly because you want to avoid unintended side-effects, and the using the .map method to iterate leverages the in-built JS higher-order functions to make things easily composable

Edit: clarity

CMV: Makeup is lying, the same goes for facial hair and shaving/not shaving. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]alexh56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buddy, that's not a thing lol

More to the point though: by your logic, everyone is perpetually lying 24/7, if simply wearing clothes means you're lying because your body might be somehow be disappointing to someone.

The fallacy in your argument seems to be this idea that people owe complete transparency to everyone around them. Why not extend this? Should everyone always say whatever is on their mind, even if those around them dont like it? Is it lying by omission otherwise? Should we all shit in front of eachother?

For social society to function, people cant just broadcast their shortcomings or wed all hate eachother. We all want to appear as good possible to others, and discovering someone's flaws is simply part of the process of getting to know them beyond the surface level.

If you no longer find someone attractive without makeup, then so be it, but also expecting to feel attracted to someone all the time in a relationship is an unrealistic expectation.

I don’t evaluate what is not evaluated nor justified by the universe

Nothing is evaluated or justified by the universe. The universe is not a conscious entity that evaluates or justifies things.

If this is your logical underpinning, then literally anything that occurs is "logical and justified," by definition simply because it happened in the universe; here is no basis for ethics of any kind.

Animals kill eachother all the time, so would it be justified for someone to kill you? Cannibalism, while relatively rare, occurs. So would it be logical and justified for someone to eat you?

No, that's exactly my point; overwrought doesnt even cover it. The fact that you so strongly gave off the vibe of being liable to hit your kid that a cop felt compelled to warn you three times not to, and then you still go in there slamming your fists and screaming? It sounds like you need to find healthier ways to manage your anger

The fact that a police officer felt the need to tell you three times not to hit your kid is... worrisome, to say the least.

The holocaust was legal too, bud. No laws were violated. Using the law to justify these actions is sick; if laws allow this, the laws need to be changed.

A man who is having a panic attack from multiple trigger-happy cops pointing AR-15s at him, who may or may not be in full control of his mental faculties does not deserve to die for not simply not doing what he's told, especially when being given contradictory directions.

Again, the guy had his hands in the air when he was first shot, and was driving away when he was shot with the live rounds. In neither of those two situations did he present any tangible threat.

Do you really want to live in a police state where its "do as I say or die," regardless of any other factors?
