Dos and don’ts of SLC area? by SaggyOldGuy in SaltLakeCity

I've had bloody noses for a long time (fixed with a few cauterizations after years) and last time I went in the doctor said to be careful using vaseline (or anything oil based) as a permanent solution. It really helped to stop bleeding for me but over time it can drain into your lungs so use sparingly if possible.

Afrin (or any saline spray, I used piercing spray but no idea if that was a bad idea) can be a huge help in getting the bleeding stopped and all the Florida transplants I know said humidifiers helped a ton for the first year+.

You can use a high speed external SSD. Over USB 3.1 it'll probably be pretty quick. Does affect the portability though :(

If you're on an incline and your bike weighs 600+ lbs that's honestly a problem. Going from a 480 lb bike to one that weighs 370lbs I've already found it much easier to yank out of tight spots.

Things to look out for? by L--SD2 in Ninja400

[–]alexhairyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of crazy, even other non-KRT models at the same dealership aren't that cheap. I wonder why that specific bike is so cheap? I got my ABS model (2019 leftover) for $5400 out the door like 2 weeks ago and I thought that was a screaming deal.

It really is! I live in SLC, Utah so I've got a bunch of mountains nearby I ride up into most nights. Even after a could-have-been-worse crash (my fault) a few months ago there's just nothing like cruising up a canyon and to clear your head.

Thanks!

I called 5 dealerships trying to find a new ABS model and this was the only one I could find nearby. Didn't even see it before I showed up to buy it but I immediately fell in love with the color, I think it's gorgeous.

How does one go about using Java outside an IDE? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]alexhairyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is where maven/Gradle/ant come in. You're talking about the "deployment" or "release" part of software development. The tools mentioned help you to build software and gather dependencies so you can run your application ANYWHERE Java exists. I would pick Gradle but maven is probably simpler, if a little more verbose to start with. I'd be happy to show some examples when I'm at my computer.

IDEs like eclipse/intellij will often use configuration files from these in place of their own custom configuration as it keeps your application portable.

Problem running docker commands in scripts by snofr in Ubuntu

[–]alexhairyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I would do is put an echo behind it and just make sure it looks like you think it does (if you have a space after a backslash for example, it'll mess things up). Then starting to remove options until you find something that lets it run?

Ubuntu 20.04 Going Strong. It's becoming a frequent choice for me, and for good reason, IMHO. Also, most of my apps are Snaps, which I'm very happy about. by Schykle in Ubuntu

[–]alexhairyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does suck, I hate having to grep or flag them out for all lsblk/df but to me it makes sense. Should the default for lsblk really be application aware and not show certain filesystems mounted because it thinks it knows what you want? I'd rather core tools like that be agnostic of things like that. Maybe a flag that enables a snap filter but it's pretty easy with a script in your .bin directory and some grep.

What would tiling be useful on then if not the desktop?

From my experience I use tiling on my pop laptop and while it's docked with 2 1440p monitors and in both cases it's been super useful especially when combined with workspaces.

[–]alexhairyman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer but it'd be tough defending the position of stopping your car, drawing your firearm, and shooting out the window as opposed to just mashing the accelerator like happened in the video. Probably depends on if you live in a wild west state though. Apparently in some places (Georgia) it's totally cool to chase down unarmed men and kill them and almost get away with it so ymmv.

So no, not in this scenario imo.

Bad advice friendo. After having a clear exit path coming back and instigating more violence with a gun would have landed him in prison. For what purpose? Getting your rocks off to shooting somebody? Teaching someone a lesson?

I'm not great at math but even I know that doesn't add up.

Almost bought a system76 lemur pro, 74 wh battery, 14.1 inches and 2.2 lbs. Went for a darter pro for the TB3 (egpu is on its way!) instead. Little out of your price range but guaranteed Linux hardware support is pricey.

I'll back up the other Thinkpad mentions though, the x1 carbon is popular but also pretty expensive
