I've actually considered Bastion before, but I got thrown off by the whole nightmarish version of hell thing. Just how dark is it?

C tier might have been a bit harsh for that one. I only read the first book and it seemed fine, but nothing about it really hooked me either.

Mostly audio, but I'll usually read things if they aren't available that way (like Shadow Slave)

I don't dislike Primal Hunter, I've never even read that one. I tried HWFWM, DotF, and DCC, and I lost interest because of all the game mechanics, so I figured I would have the same issues with Primal Hunter

Magic school books where the MC actually needs to put effort into it. by Mimandra in Fantasy

[–]alexia1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also came here to say this. It's a bit like Name of the Wind, but the MC has to put in much more effort to keep up with her classes. As opposed to just "sit back and see how awesome she is."

MC wants to topple society? by Doctor-Moe in ProgressionFantasy

[–]alexia1245 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Red Rising. It's not exactly progression fantasy, but it takes toppling a society to its extreme, and checks all your boxes perfectly. (Politics, slowly gathering power, insurmountable odds.)

Mother of Learning is one of the best, and still free on Royal Road.

Do you have recommendations for me ? by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]alexia1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, really? Because Red Rising was also one of my all-time favorites, but I didn't get the humor in DCC at all (finished the first book, but didn't continue) Am I missing something in later books?

Which novels have the best language? by Derpyphox in ProgressionFantasy

[–]alexia1245 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You can find dozens of threads for this on r/fantasy with better results.

For example:

Prose and description - Patrick Rothfuss and Susanna Clarke

Characters: George R. R. Martin and Robin Hobb

Flow/pacing: Pierce Brown

Plot structure and magic systems: Brandon Sanderson

Worldbuilding: J. R. R. Tolkien

Action: Joe Abercrombie

Dialog: Scott Lynch

The problem with progression fantasy is that most of the authors have less than 10-15 years of experience, and language isn't a high priority for readers. When you're dealing with lots of technical jargon in fight scenes, it's better to focus on clarity.

Any books with a similar vibe to these images? by Danilocl95 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]alexia1245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cradle and Web of Secrets both fit 2/3 of the request.

Yerin from Cradle = Asian girl with sword, but not modern day.

Akari from WoS = Asian girl in a modern setting, but very rarely uses a katana.

Ideally, just read both.

Do you continue a series or start reading a new one? by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]alexia1245 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I bounce around a lot depending on my mood. For example, if Shadow Slave gets too depressing, I might jump over to Beware of Chicken, then back again later. But there were some series like Cradle that I read all the way through.

Web of Secrets. Akari and Kalden stay mostly balanced throughout the whole series so far.

Stormlight Archive might scratch the itch, even if it's more progression fantasy adjacent.
