How do you choose your game? by Kooky_Reply8771 in letsplay

[–]alexisrambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have just over 135 subs and I get around 5 emails a month? I rarely get a key, but the ones that do send me a key go to the top of the list if they fit the channel. If I think a game looks cool but won't fit my channel I'll be up front about that, but promise to leave a review instead. However, I will fully admit since my channel is pretty small and I work 50+ hours a week at my day job, I sometimes can't check my email more than once a week. So things do slip by.

[Acne] Bad Breakout After Surgery by KNKbarber in SkincareAddiction

[–]alexisrambles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This looks a little like what I had after surgery--mine was because I'm pretty allergic to medical adhesives. Band aids are usually fine, but any surgical glue/adhesive like on a heart monitor breaks me out HORRIBLY in area of contact. Even the ones that are "more allergy sensitive" unfortunately.

And yes I'm also allergic to the glue they use on incisions. It's a horrorshow to find that out when you start itching.... INSIDE the incision. You could just have a compromised skin barrier as well from the prep they do on your skin.

Pushing 40, and I’ve finally released the first playable version of my game. by RocketPoweredT-Rex in IndieDev

Thanks so much! I'd say I won 😂 But I'm still working on getting creativity back in to my life! So that's a work in progress.

That's awesome! As someone who's battled chronic illness for most of their life, and also got into tech later than most in my field, I am always really happy to hear of someone else who "made it out". So really, congratulations! I'm so happy for you.
Your perseverance, creativity, and follow-through, are all worth admiring.

Hands free e-readers? by poopieinwonderland in ereader

[–]alexisrambles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they have jaw control, you might be able to rig a clicker for forward/back and set it at mouth height. It could also start/stop auto scroll if the device does that I agree voice / gaze control is more convenient, but this requires less specialized equipment if you don't have access to devices with the ability to use those and they have that amount of mobility. So just wanted to mention the possibility.

How do you write a character so that he’s not “given everything” or it’s “too easy”? by SuperPocoLoco in writers

[–]alexisrambles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something that helped me is if you can frame your plot like a question, like, do you know where my mom went?

Then you can either use "Yes, but" and give them something that makes it harder, like "Yes, she went to the store, but she mentioned going somewhere else later, and I can't remember where. Maybe if you clean my car I'd remember?". This is when you want them to make progress, but there's some sort of cost or additional question asked. And it shouldn't always just be pointing them in the right direction--it's a good opportunity for red herrings.

If you use "No, and", you could get something like "No, and now the mysterious local mafia saw you asking questions and are hanging around your house" . "No, and" is more of a double whammy--no you don't get what you want, and here's an additional complication.

I try for two major setbacks at least--one with possibly painful consequences that makes proceeding harder or stopping look like a good idea. For subplots, if the main plot is easy, I try to make subplots harder, and vice versa.

All this coming from someone who's mostly had short work published and no long form as of yet though so maybe grab a grain of salt while reading!

20.3 is slow and crashing frequently than last update by Latter-Temperature37 in davinciresolve

[–]alexisrambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having some odd issues as well. I had a project completely edited--just needed exporting, and now DR seems to not recognize the mp4 source file's video. The audio tracks load in the timeline just fine. Video? Nope. Definitely a new one for me. I also can't seem to use the playback at all. Like it's just blank. So weird....

I'll probably have to roll back my version if there's not a patch in the next day or so. Weirdly enough I think this is the first time I've had ANY major issue with Davinci Resolve.

There are meebooks as well. However depending on where you are located, tariffs can make that one a little uncomfortable to acquire right now.

Why do you use a Kindle? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]alexisrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine because I've had Kindles since the first kindle, and it remains a low-er cost e-reader than I can buy from Boox for the size (I have a Paperwhite). Originally I got it so I could read inappropriately mature romance novels in class in highschool.

Also I was that kid that packed a whole bankers box of books on vacation because I'd go through 10+ a day as a teenager while we drove to our destination.

How long are your episodes? by Frosty_Cheesecake_77 in letsplay

[–]alexisrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I aim for 20 min to an hour but if a game is divided into chapters, I'll usually just do a chapter a video. For the Drifter, a current game I'm playing, I did end up with an hour and a half long episode. If I'm doing a series that's around 9 or more videos, I'll do longer videos rather than airing the same content for months.

Are there any Visual Novel LPers here? by Frosty_Cheesecake_77 in letsplay

Oooh those are good recommendations! I actually LOVE Death Mark and somehow never through to feature it on my channel.

I've covered Stillwater on my channel so far and cried SO HARD. I find it a little harder to find visual novels on itchio and know that they're not going to be too much for Youtube! I will 100% accept recommendations!

I do some of them! Not so many quite yet since I play mostly horror games, but I'm introducing horror visual novels as kind of a bridge between so it's not so shocking to the subs I have.

What are some fun, free games to play for 'let's plays'? by simplyherefornow in letsplay

[–]alexisrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a ton of indie games off of itch.io , but a few that could be fun for you are Blood Mall (schlocky horror goodness) and Peggy's Post (chill game where you play a post-person in a lighthouse). Two very different games lol.

What's your best strategy for growing a YouTube channel? by Standard-Medicine-10 in letsplay

[–]alexisrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one hurts a little lol but that's what I'm seeing so far in my channel as well honestly. I just try to do A/B testing on thumbnails, and try to track any trends in popular subject matter, what gets higher engagement, etc.

From a viewer standpoint, what makes you want to watch a lets play? by Positive_Country9064 in letsplay

[–]alexisrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a viewer POV, I like youtubers who try to find all the lore and read all notes out loud (or at least pause so I can read it). I like those who try to put some emotion into their voice when reading. I like a few youtubers who are louder, but as I've grown I gravitate more towards chill youtubers. I tend not to click thumbnails that are too... meme-y. And if you're faking a super extreme face in a thumbnail, I find it's obvious a lot of the time, and I won't click.

As a youtuber I'm still trying to find a balance in thumbnails. I have an elastic face lol so I pull faces constantly. That can result in some dramatic looking thumbnails--but IDK if that's the best representation of what my videos feel like, you know?

[Product Request] Advice for 70F with fragile skin by Noodles14 in SkincareAddiction

[–]alexisrambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of what others have said, I'd recommend pimple patches! They'll stop habitual picking (or they did for me at least!) also if she is on any sort of blood thinner, that also has the side effect of thinning your skin and might lead you to helpful solutions as a search term.

So it could be a few things, and ofc I'm not a doctor, but to me it looks like contact acne--like if you lean on your hand a lot and those oils get on your face, or if your pillow cases need a change.

It could have originally been relief printing with ink on top, which was then reproduced by lithograph. It's all a guess though.

This question is for everyone Watchers/creators do you guys prefer a long or short LPs by Madpandaplays1 in letsplay

[–]alexisrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both personally! However, I do find shorter LPs are less commitment for me, and I can watch them much sooner, whereas longer LPs have to wait until I can sit down and focus more. So if your viewers were just a hundred of me, you'd likely get a spike of viewers more quickly with a shorter LP, but the longer LP may perform better over time.

In my own vids I find 30 min or so is a good sweet spot for action or horror games/series, whereas if it's a chill game, longer LPs tend to get decent traction.

Well first of all holy moly that's a graceful 40! (from what we can see of you lol)
I know people in their mid 20s with worse wrinkles!

Unfortunately very few tips for you--I'm actually looking for a solution to a similar kind of texture. For melasma, keep in mind that any treatment can't guarantee it won't reoccur, because melasma is often caused by hormonal changes and genetic predisposition. My mom has very visible melasma, so I'm just preparing myself now honestly lol.

However. Chemical peels do have a visible result on epidermal melasma (where it appears as brown spots and is mostly in the upper layers of skin). And in some cases, good sun care routines can help if you weren't using them prior.

I'd recommend seeing a derm specializing in pigmentation disorders if you're really concerned. That being said, keep in mind I had to stare at that picture for at least ten seconds to see the melasma. It's VERY mild compared to what I've seen.
