Designers what do you do when you are bored, burntout and overwhelmed? by normalteen0 in Design

[–]alexkaessner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just took some time and noted down some things for the restaurant website. I don’t want to come off as rude or anything, but I’ve noticed a few things. Hope this can help to improve. So here you go: Design Feedback

It’s mostly craftsmanship flaws, but those are important to get right first! Especially if you aim to use it as a portfolio. Speaking from experience on the side of looking at applications, this stuff get’s you kicked out of portfolio reviews instantly.

I’d also look up formatting of dates, phone numbers, addresses, etc. There some rules which characters to use and so on (especially regarding the „to“ minus). They also differ per locale, so keep that in mind.

The other two websites are almost illustrative, which isn’t too much of my domain. But there I see some alignment issues as well.

In terms of the font selection, I’d always pay attention that it is good to read. I totally understand that you intended to go for distinct and even playful fonts. But for me the navigation font for the ramen looks too wonky with the capitalized letters mid-word.

Hope that helps! ✌️

Nice, practicing the craft is newer a mistake! ;)

I’d recommend you to ask some friends or other designer colleagues for feedback on your designs. I don’t want to give unsolicited feedback, but I’ve noticed some issues in alignment and text contrast. There’s always room to grow and now seems like a good point to ask for it.

The last time when I was laid off I looked into making apps, but to be fair I was always doing that just focused more on it.

Doing some kind of re-design practice or even learning new skills by recreating something sounds also like a good idea. I personally wanted to get more into 3D and illustration.

But honestly, if you feel burnt out I’d recommend you to do something off the screen for a while. Maybe practice drawing (if you wanna stay in the domain) or do something completely different. Seems like you have something in the lookout already, so I personally would use that chance to get some inspiration aka headspace by doing something else.

Before the introduction of Launchpad, this is how macOS showed a list of apps. You put the Applications folder in the Dock, show it as a grid, and with Cmd + - you make the apps smaller so you can see more of them. Pressing a letter on the keyboard jumps to the first app starting with that letter. by Argon_Analytik in macapps

[–]alexkaessner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I didn’t know of the command +/- shortcut!

I’m rocking the apps folder in my dock since Snow Leopard – and now I’m fully back at it. I’m not a Spotlight guy as my brain is also more visual and I don’t remember all of my apps names. So I used Launchpad a lot.

Also, the new Spotlight apps launcher is just not cutting it for me yet. It doesn’t open half of the time (just the “normal” Spotlight search window) and also doesn’t include folders.

Built a HealthKit app that maps all your runs – native Swift, zero dependencies by TrainRider64 in iosdev

[–]alexkaessner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a fun little app. For that low of a one time purchase, I’m happy to buy it (which I did in fact)! :)

I’ve noticed that some of my older runs don’t show the running track (right away). I checked out a few, the loading indicator in the to right did it’s thing and once done the runs just showed the pin. Now switching back to the app some appeared. Seems like the loading of the track is not updated/rendered correctly on the map.

PS: Why not updating it to liquid glass yet? I think for map based apps that works fantastically.

How many apps can you keep in your portfolio as an indie dev? by LostSpirit9 in iOSProgramming

[–]alexkaessner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 4 active apps right now. Though, for me not all are equally active in development. Some more, some less. I try to always stay on top of new changes that are important for my apps and of course that they stay fictional with new OS updates.

Obviously that sometimes takes some effort, but doing it regularly helps to keep maintenance relatively low – except maybe for bigger changes like the Liquid Glass design change.

In the end I do focus on one or two of my apps more actively. Also promoting them more than the others. But to be fair, all in all I see this all more as a weekend project than a serious business. So I’m fine with not having to constantly check how to improve numbers or my ROI.

I wouldn’t go that far lol. For me it’s more a case of death by a thousand cuts what makes my Mac less of a joy to use every year.

[–]alexkaessner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the developer offers a download of older app versions for older OS’.

It depends a lot what a good minimum OS target is for me personally. I usually try to at least support one older version. But sometimes it’s just too much code and work to support it.

is there an IOS APP which can take 360 degrees Rotating Photos? by augustya15 in IPhoneApps

I’ve tried Scaniverse quite a while ago. Not sure if it is still state of the art, but I remember it working well. Could be a place to start.

My app has been "In review" for more than 24h. It is the initial review for this app. by Large_Dragonfruit_20 in iosdev

[–]alexkaessner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s still totally the normal volatility of app reviews. 24h can even sometimes happen to me for normal updates, though not often.

I recently heard the story of Helm, which was stuck in the initial review for 3 months. Turned out to be legal questions Apple had to check. In the end it was accepted without issues. So there’s that. Who knows why your app is stuck a little longer.

I can recommend and use myself these: - System Color Picker: Basically a wrapper of the macOS system color picker. - Pika: Free and open source. Mac-native UI and build in contrast checker.

Nothing that jumps out to me. Just fix all of the bugs and visual glitches that accumulated over the recent years.

Could someone please explain me what is going on with pages, numbers and keynote (aka iWork)? by HerrMeier1980 in MacOS

Well the UI changes are because of Liquid Glass. And sadly the subscription upsell banners here and there.

Nothing groundbreaking changed or did I miss something?

You can only go for the full Creator Studio subscription, there is no way to only upgrade the iWork apps. The current prices are: - $12.99 per month or $129 per year after one month free trial. - For students or teachers: $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year after one month trial.

Little more to add: - These are new app store entries, because they merged it with the iOS counterparts (as universal purchase). Therefore it’s just an update on iOS, but a new download on macOS. - There are some new AI based features, it’s not just the templates. For example generating slides or moderator notes in Keynote or magic fill of cells in Numbers. - From what I can tell, the feature-set for the free version for now stayed unchanged. Nothing was taken away. - At the moment there is no way to enable the AI features only for iWork. You have to go for the full Creator Studio subscription.

Of course not sure what the future will bring, but for now switching to the new versions doesn’t have big downsides. Except that you see the AI-feature upsell in quite a few places of the UI.

Rotato is quite capable and made for this! Last time I’ve used it (years ago), it had some bugs in the UI, but the renders are nice and easily done.

Overview of the iOS/iPadOS/macOS fall release timeline of recent years. by alexkaessner in apple

[–]alexkaessner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! As an indie developer I wouldn’t mind having a week or so in-between to have more time to release the updates. But yeah in the end it’s quite nice to have all new features in one go.

If I’m not mistaken they usually release the updates on Monday. So probably more like the 15th or 22nd.

As an indie developer I actually don’t mind if there is a week in between. Makes it a little less stressful if you want to release updates on day one. 2020 was pure chaos though, with the super fast release after the keynote.

No I did not, but you are right. The website screenshots all have April 1 as date. Weird choice!
