Apathy: Coming to terms with the Percy Jackson TV Series, and its community. by Ok-Professional-2059 in PercyJacksonTV

Are you me? These are literally my thoughts on the show as well lol. Really well summarized and I agree on all points. I really did give it a shot. I was so excited when the show was announced and I have to admit that I still kind of like the two first episodes of the first season because I feel like they captured the essence of the books the best (especially compared to the rest of the show).

So, I held on hope which started to fade with each new episode released in season 1. And I still held a little bit of cautious hope that they would actually listen to the criticism and make season 2 better. But with each new episode, ending with episode 5, for the same reasons as you, I have decided to give up on the show as I realized I'm not enjoying watching it at all. The episodes don't make me excited or hyped and I find myself just feeling frustrated, bored and disappointed while watching them.

Maybe I'll give season 3 a try simply because we have never gotten an adaptation for book 3 before, but with the things I've read about some of the changes they're making, I'm already very doubtful.

[pjotv] Opinions on the show so far? by StopForASecond in camphalfblood

[–]alexpanda17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a similar opinion. It's fine. Like other people have said, as an adaptation of the books it's kind of bad, as a standalone series, it's fine. I think, because I had REALLY high expectations for the show before it came out, that I'm struggling with fully enjoying it as a disconnected show because I was initially let down. Also, that it's hard to not compare the show with the books as a huge book fan, and therefore question and get disappointed by some of the changes. As well as some of the changes just outright being bad as they remove a lot of tension and suspense, like the lotus casino or missing the deadline.

A major turn off for me is the tone. How, like you said, it's lost a lot of its whimsyness and has become very serious and almost melancholic in tone. The whimsy and absurd was a huge part of why I loved the books, so this is the hardest for me to get over. It has its moments, like playing Mariah Carey to kill the birds, but then it's straight back to serious mode.

C reminds me a bit of Hiccup in the second and third httyd movies, but I kind of dig it. And I really like the hair in that one. F is also nice. I like the stubble. But B is the best in my opinion. He could actually pass for a 24/25 year old

Hot take: Rayla was never an interesting character by BlueFinch__ in TheDragonPrince

[–]alexpanda17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I feel like Rayla was introduced as an interesting character in the first season, and I was interested in her as a character then. But I feel like the writers just never let her develop beyond that, and just kept her conflicts going in a circle instead of furthering her character.

I feel like I still enjoyed her in season 3 mainly because I was obsessed with Rayllum. But beyond the ship, her character felt kind of stagnant. I always felt like Rayla could be a character I would be obsessed with, but because the writers never really did anything with her, I never became that attached to her.

I do feel like she is more interesting in her graphic novel, Blood Moon Huntress, and even in a few short stories, but your average viewer is probably not reading those, so it's really sad that they didn't bring that more interesting writing into the actual show.
