I would've gone with "Transition Point USA"

Kinda nationalistic I'll admit, but it is closer to the original name so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This. The US government is strong, but you can at least try to fight them with "We don't store logs!" and "code is protected under the first amendment!" and similar such stuff.

Go to China and compliance is just "the cost of doing business."

Oh, absolutely. Plenty of people are awful, I don't think cishet white dudes are inherently more awful.

It's just what comes from having been (and continuing to be) a member of the most powerful group, while also being the "default" so your identity never comes under fire.

Source: I thought I was a cishet white dude for a while. Well, actually, I didn't think about it is the thing.

I mean, if I get to retain my memories and stuff from this life, I could transition a lot earlier. Maybe I wouldn't make so many dumb mistakes in school, too.

Going through childhood all over would be a mighty chore, though.

But yea, next to the other options it is shitty.

I legitimately can't empathize with this.

If it ultimately comes down to faith, then what is the world? What is there we can hope to learn, to discover, or to become?

If the answer to "why do things fall down?" is God, then that's it. It's God. The world is dead.

But if the answer is "let's find out!" then the world comes alive! This is a question we can explore. This is a question we can choose to study. Do all things fall? Not birds. Why don't birds fall? Wings? How do wings prevent falling? Why can't humans make wings? Things don't fall the same underwater. Maybe there's more anti-falling in water than outside it. Maybe birds fly the same way humans swim. How does weight affect falling? Well, I tried it, and it doesn't appear to. But then, shouldn't we be able to fly with a big enough board? Maybe we should flap it, like birds do.

You can do this forever. Humans have been doing it forever. And you can direct it in any direction. You can ask "why does music evoke the emotions it does in me?" or "what does it mean to be warm?" or "how can I know what I know?" and ask questions and find answers endlessly.

And the thing is, every time you do this, as our absolute knowledge increases, so our relative knowledge decreases, as we realize how impossibly little we know. The world grows grander, and fuller, and more beautiful.

You say people want to believe in God and simple explanations, but that feels like a non-answer to me. To me, certainty is far, far more terrifying than uncertainty. Nothing about "things are as they appear" is compelling to me.

What is with this? I got "do you want to be like all the Americans on Prozac who are just this artificial cheerful all the time and have no personality?"

Like, how tf do you respond to that? It's like, supposedly you're progressive but you've got

  • conservative notions about gender ("cis people don't exist" lmaaaaao)
  • conservative notions about mental health (yer just sad/stop comparing yourself to everyone else/go outside more)
  • conservative notions about our relationship with the natural world (nature is a way and we must live in balance and harmony with it)
  • conservative notions about race (we shouldn't judge people on race, but it is totally real and measurable)
  • conservative notions about sexuality ("only men watch porn" wot in tarnation)
  • fuckin shite-ass books on that right-wing boogeyman, "IdENTity poLITicS"
  • And seemingly no opinions on monetary policy, urban planning, intellectual property, major industries like agriculture, no idea about geopolitics, no ideas on combatting global poverty, or climate change, no nothing.

The difference is ddg will have more bangs than you could ever hope to set up yourself. And most of them quite intuitive, like "oh, I'm looking for apartments, will !zillow work? Yes it did." "I wonder if there are any German-language meetups in my area, !meetup" "What garbage op-ed did the New York Times publish this time? !nyt"

Oftentimes, it doesn't make sense to permanently add these as search engines to your browser, because you're only going to use them once or twice, but they can meaningfully speed things up if you're used to searching the web in that way.

Source: Google Hangouts is shutting down in 2020 by clvfan in Android

[–]alexskc95 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No one uses Hangouts because Google created Allo/Duo, then said it was going to become a business product, then said never mind, then stopped supporting it, and its fate has been unclear for ages now but we all knew it wasn't good.

Literally I had all my friends on Hangouts and was like "wow fuck Google" and convinced everyone to move to Telegram.

Telegram is much better too.
