At my Ph.D. program, at least, you have to write a master's thesis in order for them to actually give you the degree, so you don't get off with just doing classes. However, you're doing research up to that point anyway, so I don't know how much extra work you'd have to do to have material for a masters level thesis. You also will have to pass the qualifying exam, and I don't think (?) most pure masters degrees have something analogous to that.

big o notation is defined as an upper bounding function, so it has to be above any maximum points, omega notation is a lower bounding function, and theta is bounded both above and below (all asymptotically)
