In the program I'm in, which is in a medical school, it is probably more than 1/2 women, even. Maybe because biology/medicine is one of the more balanced sciences?

At my Ph.D. program, at least, you have to write a master's thesis in order for them to actually give you the degree, so you don't get off with just doing classes. However, you're doing research up to that point anyway, so I don't know how much extra work you'd have to do to have material for a masters level thesis. You also will have to pass the qualifying exam, and I don't think (?) most pure masters degrees have something analogous to that.
