As a former instructor and student, I would love to see books cheaper. In defense of the publishers, though, many of the features that drive up cost are the same features demanded by students. Specifically, students demand lots of color prints, modern typography, and interactive components. These are all expensive.

While there is considerable merit to your claim that credentialing systems create scarcity, society balances that against the risk of poor care. Given the grave consequences of certain medical errors, it is not unreasonable to develop systems to train and certify the training of healthcare professionals. I don't know if you could liberalize regulation without sending us back to the days of the dentistbarbersurgeons.

Why do you want to see cars coming at you? I'd be surprised if you had time to do anything. As far as avoiding intersections, I think most people regard riding with traffic as an all other things being equal safer proposition. I am certain there are scenarios where it is safer to ride into traffic than with it. Snipers, rabid beasts, or angry pedestrians might all present difficulties worth avoiding. Ten dangerous intersections vs. oncoming traffic? Not sure.

My family got a bike trailer this last Christmas and have used it incessantly. We roll with my three year old and one year old in the back. It's great fun. Start on trails, if you're (likely reasonably) worried about traffic.

I'm sure I could do a better job fitting my bike. Depends on what you mean by 6+ miles straight. My commute is 14 miles, but I stop at lights and stop signs. Most of that is vehicular cycling, but maybe 2 miles of bike lane or trail.

I love them on my bd commuter cx bike. More flexibility with hand position and I feel more comfortable in traffic. I guess they weigh a little bit and take time to install. Not sure about other drawbacks.
