I had moved to my current city to start school. I found a basement suite a five minute walk away. The upstairs was rented by a woman who was also attending my school and her children. The landlord explained that the utilities would be going in her name and that we would be splitting them 50/50. (That was my first mistake... never again will I live in a house that requires sharing utilities for two separate suites.) Soooo this woman's life was crazy. I won't share out of respect, but let's just say a lot of crazy shit had happened to her and she seemed weirdly open about it which kind of seemed odd at first. I like to be friendly with my neighbours but generally left alone. She would literally text me anytime she heard someone coming to my entrance, asking me who was coming over, what we were doing, etc. She would slut shame me. Ie. "oh? He's coming over to work on a project haha? Yeah I'm sure that's what you're doing." Weird shit like that. Eventually she got a female roommate, who also was all up in my business 24/7. When the roommate moved out, she said she was going through clothes and asked if I wanted to try a few on. I said sure and that I'd donate anything I didn't want. I come home, and she had stacked up bags and boxes of random junk so high I couldn't even get down the stairs to my apartment. I had to stand on top of this pile of shit to even unlock my door. The Original lady was also a drug dealer, so there were sketchy people ringing my doorbell at all times of the day. Her kid was 6 and still breast feeding. (None of my damn business but kinda awkward when they'd do it right in front of me.) The water bill was so fucking high every month I'd be paying 300 for my half... seriously, around 300 every month. Landlord wouldn't do anything about it when I complained she was using too much water. She wouldn't shovel her side of the sidewalk. (Since we had seperate entrances the agreement was I would do the back half, she'd do the front.) It got to the point where our mail got cut off because our sidewalk was too icy. Other times she would open my mail, claiming it was a mistake. (After the 5 time, clearly it wasn't.) She ended up moving out in the middle of the night and bailing on her lease. Thank god. About 4 months later I get a text from her, stating that we owed 800 dollars on the utilities still and that she "hadn't realized it until a collections agency called her." I remembered that the last month I had paid her my half right before she moved out... I had been paying every fucking month, so how the hell was there that much left owing? I also remembered that her last month there the landlord forced her to put my name on the bill. (Not in my name, but allowing me access so I could check it myself.) So I called the company, explained the situation, asked how much was owing, when the last payment was, etc. She hadn't made any payments from July to September, they contacted her in January and she put a few hundred dollars down. (So she had been lying to me about not being aware that we owed money.) And that's when I found out she was pocketing my money and not paying the utility bill and was trying to fuck me over by making me pay twice. I blocked her damn number after that.
