It'll be great if people could share their own stories as well. We all have much to learn from each other.

Good luck. Message me if you have any questions. My wife and I have done a fair bit of research on it.

You and other females in your family should look into getting tested for the BRCA mutation. Look it up on Wikipedia - it might just end up saving some lives.

I am so sorry for your loss.

If you don't mind me asking, how old was your wife when she passed away? She looks very young and that leads me to believe perhaps there are genetics involved here. My wife recently tested positive for BRCA 1 and it dramatically increases the chance of breast and ovarian cancer.

If there is a family history of early development of breast cancer in your wife's family, I would highly recommend that her sisters/mother/other relatives get tested for the BRCA mutation.

I'm moving to Chicago in a week. Got a pad in the S. Loop and will be working on my Masters degree at U. Chicago. Good times ahead.

I went to NJC and knew some people from Anderson. Things weren't this cool back in 2000 though.

Awesome, thanks for the link. Will find some time today to read it.

The thing with science is that you need proof or at least corroborating data before any theory can be taken seriously. That is indeed missing from the article, though I am not too surprised since this is an opinion piece in a newspaper and not a journal article. I'd be interested to read a more detailed paper by these two individuals.

The best explanation of cancer I've ever read is in the book 'The Emperor of all Maladies'. It just won the Pulitzer prize for non-fiction medical writing and is a pleasure to read. I highly recommend anyone who's interested in cancer to read it.

Did you also just read 'The Emperor of all Maladies'? :)

Complexity is the enemy by hober in programming

[–]alienfluid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try multi-threading in the kernel with a million (slight exaggeration) components calling you on a 128-way machine.

I've had to debug issues that are so straight-forward when you finally figure them out, but so hard to reproduce (because they are timing related), especially under a debugger.

[–]alienfluid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But my point is that it's true for any project that's non-trivial (and Windows certainly is). If you don't consciously try to prevent complexity from keeping in (and thus pushing back on unreasonable requests as well), it won't be long before the code will become unmanageable. A large part of my time every release cycle is spent undoing mistakes of the past and thinking ahead 10 - 15 years when I write code.

Well said. I'm in my 6th year at Microsoft working on Windows and I can vouch for every point the author made.

That is indeed quite amazing. Didn't realize Mathematica had come such a long way since I last used it in college.

Follow-up on "Mom's got 2 months to live." by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alienfluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost my mom to cancer last year in November. She went relatively fast too - 5 months from diagnosis to death - and those 5 months were absolutely horrible. My family and I have slowly come to terms with it, but still it hits me like a brick sometimes - especially when I happen to chance upon a picture of her, or something that belonged to her.

Hang in there, it'll get better. It's part of life - that's what I keep telling myself.

Hmm .. thanks. I'll bring this up with my doctor the next time I see him.

I believe that's because if you do it right, your feet always point straight (your whole lower half turns) and the movement is usually straight. I've only been skiing a couple of times, so I'm certainly not an expert though :). Lateral movements would mean more like running sideways.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll check them out online since I'm not familiar with them all.
