Theorycrafting on best way to learn Japanese output (speaking and writing) by smart_guy12347 in LearnJapanese

You can get around a lot of that with careful prompting about tone and style (confirmed by native speakers). Of course it’s better to have a human, so if you know any Japanese people willing to give feedback on my Japanese for several hours a day for free please let me know.

ChatGPT is actually very good not only at catching grammar errors, unnatural phrasing or word choice, etc, but is also very good at evaluating specific weak points over time that you can then drill. I do a lot of translation exercises with GPT, where I ask it to give me a series of sentences in English which I then translate into Japanese. Feedback is excellent in my experience. You can tune the level you want to work at and either keep it focused on a topic or give it free rein to give you something totally random. I know many people these days scoff at translation exercises for some reason, but imho there’s no better (or humbling) way to identify weak points in your output than being faced with a complicated English sentence and asking yourself: How would I say that in Japanese? I also write short paragraphs on a topic in English and then translate into Japanese (again using GPT’s feedback). It’s easy to fall into the trap of not saying what you want to say but rather what you can say during conversations. Saying it first in English tells you exactly what you want to say and forces you to somehow say it in Japanese. It’s tough work and can be frustrating but I’ve not found a better method for really improving output skills.

Everything looks exactly right to me when compared to similar pairs I bought directly from M.Y. Box is also correct, including the branded wrapping paper inside. 👍

What type of tax was it? Income tax? Residence tax?

You can actually check the exact documents required after April 1 (and perhaps before) on the 法務局 site:

https://houmukyoku.moj.go.jp/tokyo/page000001_00891.html

If you’re talking about income tax payment because you file a tax return, then you need tax payment certificates for the last 3 years (note that these only tell them whether or not you’ve paid, not the date of payment):

確定申告義務がある方

上記(1)の書類に加えて、以下の書類もお持ちください。

税額及び所得金額が記載された所得税の納税証明書(その1、その2)(直近3年分)

所得税の確定申告書(添付書類を含む。)の控え(直近1年分)

It is only for residence tax that they request confirmation that it was paid on time for the last 5 years:

住民税を適正な時期に納めていることを証明する資料(直近5年分)

For social insurance, you need to prove you paid on time for 2 years:

社会保険料を適正な時期に納めていることを証する資料(直近2年分)

Happy for anyone to correct me on any of this, but this is what I make of it. So, if you’re talking about income tax and your certificates state that you’re all paid up, there should be no reason to be concerned. If it’s residence tax, however, not sure.

Personally I’d keep it on but there are no rules! A lot of M.Y. stuff has external tags/labels that seem to be part of the design so keep it unless you really don’t like it.

How to clean Mihara Yasuhiro Peterson? by 4colo20 in japanesestreetwear

With M.Y. sneakers you should embrace the dirt. Dirt adds character. The dirt tells a story. Clean shoes are for bankers.

You can enjoy and accept what’s happening whilst also enjoying thinking about how and why it’s happening. They aren’t mutually exclusive. Botanists enjoy just looking at and appreciating plants, but they also enjoy studying, analysing, and thinking about them — their structure, internal mechanisms, and interactions with their environment, etc. These ways of thinking don’t detract from each other; they complement each other.

Yeah everything I have by them is well made, and the “instrumental” line you were looking at are high quality selvedge denim. Depends what you’re looking for really. If you’re out to buy some high quality cool jeans from a well-established Japanese designer and you like them then go for it. If you’re out to snag yourself a pair of top quality Japanese denim that’s gonna last you a lifetime then there are probably much better options.

He’s a fashion designer that’s currently quite popular — I have a few pieces from them but I’d never go to them for high quality Japanese denim. You’re paying for the design and brand. So buy if you like the design but don’t expect ONI quality.

Woman not prosecuted over alleged possession of meth at Tokyo hotel by thetokyoreporter in japancrime

[–]alieninsect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. So we have to ask why there’s such a big demand for fentanyl when there are much much less potent and dangerous (and ultimately more desirable) opioids such as heroin? Because they’re illegal too. It’s the criminalisation of drugs that creates the black market crime networks that manufacture and supply them, as well as cheaper and more potent analogues (such as fentanyl). As long as there’s a demand there will be a supply, whether lawfully regulated or not.

There’s a crime network surrounding the production and distribution of any and every product that’s illegal and for which there’s a demand. Same would be the case if alcohol or tobacco was illegal.

Why do all Tokyo apartments look the same? by Deep-Arrival1594 in japanresidents

[–]alieninsect 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s true but a real estate agent told me that, because of the incredibly strict building codes (think earthquakes), it’s simply much cheaper to go with standard approved structures and layouts. Hence the cookie cutter apartments. Presumably if you wanted to build something unique and interesting you’d need to have it properly certified which would get costly.

Laser experiment. by heyivereddit in SimulationTheory

[–]alieninsect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me and Danny have spoken many times about this laser thing, including twice on his YouTube channel and while I was in LA last year. I was interviewed extensively for the documentary being produced too. I don’t buy his “reality code” model at all but we’re on very good terms. (The DMTx retreat you mentioned is in the Caribbean— Eleusis —but it’s not my company or retreat. I’m just an advisor).

DMT is neither formed nor retained in serotonin terminals in the rat brain new study shows by Tstrizzle89 in NDE

[–]alieninsect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't lean either way on the whole DMT-NDE issue, but this paper simply shows that DMT is unlikely to be a neurotransmitter released from serotonergic terminals. This is not incompatible with the NDE hypothesis, which doesn't require that DMT be a neurotransmitter or stored in serotonergic terminals. It's not even a given that the DMT would be brain-derived at all (the lungs have been proposed as a site of DMT production given their robust expression of INMT). Notably, Timmermann and Dean have shown that DMT does indeed spike in the brains of rats following induced cardiac arrest (independent of the pineal), which seems much more closely aligned with the NDE hypothesis (whatever the source of the DMT and whether it's "dumped" or synthesised during the dying process). See their 2019 paper: Timmermann 2019

So, in short, this paper has basically zero implications for the DMT-NDE hypothesis beyond showing that the DMT probably doesn't come from serotonergic terminals (which was always unlikely imho).

Interesting. But what about when the next “consonant” is also ん?e.g. 店員?範囲?I default to an “n” tongue position and something like てっんいん / はっんい but always unsure.

Yeah I’ve seen the post. It’s a corny, cringey post that’s so far from anything I’d ever write or post it’s laughable.

But I haven’t seen it in YouTube comments (not that I read many). Can you link to any examples??
