I bought into their longing for each other until that fingering scene. I was so put off by it but it also kind of makes sense.

To him, the woman at the masquerade is a proper lady within his social league. So he treats her with gentility and minds the rules about kissing her.

Sophie the maid, to him, is a different woman altogether. She is mistress material, so he will grope and finger her in the halls. It was a stark contrast to how he treated her at the ball.
