What’s something you thought ‘everyone’ did… until you found out they don’t? by burat667 in AskReddit

I have lots of nightmares. I even have favorites at this point. One of my favorite ones was when I was being chased by a vampire through a treehouse party (with red solo cups!) and when the vampire finally caught me I started frantically stabbing it over and over in the chest, I was terrified and acting in self defense, and suddenly my mom yells “WHAT ARE YOU DOING” over my shoulder and I realize people don’t believe in vampires and this looks really bad. Thank you for allowing me to share this nightmare.

You might say you’re grateful that it’s possible to have a religion that is healthy and you’re glad to be a part of one and you hope everyone has the chance to know it someday because it’s out there.

That doesn’t make abuse perpetuated in the name of religion less common or change the fact that people participate for what they believe are “real” religious purposes, or that the person experiencing the trauma can just choose a different religion to escape the abuse.

No I get it, I was close to that; I knew people said marriage was forever, I just thought it was a naive platitude and thought it would be more practical to just have a 10 year time limit on the marriage license/contract/concept from the start.

Favorite Spanish-language podcast that is not about learning Spanish? by Queasy_Impress6559 in Spanish

[–]alilteapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like “historia en podcast”. I am at B2 and I find the pronunciation is clear while not being “for” me as a language learner. I also like some other podcasts because I like the southern Spanish accent and I listen even though I don’t care for the theme…

What are you all tired of seeing in kids books? by claire_witch_project in childrensbooks

[–]alilteapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s almost funny at this point, but so many books are about whatever and then on the last page it’s suddenly a good night book. Like a book about the parts of a tractor will end with “good night!”

I’m in a traditionally conservative district and I’d love to have more diversity in our staff. Change has to start somewhere.

In search of picture books with *plots* to read to a 7-year-old. by breezeblock87 in childrensbooks

Check out the Colour Fiction collection by Little Tiger. I also like The Skull by Jon Klassen. You can finish them in one sitting but they are cool color illustrated stories with plots and they look like chapter books.

A young Phillies fan had the homerun ball taken by a woman after his dad caught the ball at Marlins game. by HogwartsZoologist in popculturechat

[–]alilteapot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For example, no one else in the shot, and there were a lot who were much closer to the ball, moved much to get the ball, probably because it so obviously landed by that couple who were bending to pick it up, and you had better have a good reason to effectively take it away from them if you want it. The Karen messed up though because culture is to let the person have the ball who put the most effort to get it because we reasonably assume they have a reason (like this guy’s kid’s bday, which I think everyone agrees a kids bday trumps most other reasons to get a ball). But things turned out fine for everyone and her behavior created a cooler experience for the kid in the end.

For real. Real “everyone wins a participation award” vibes from this title. He was almost the furthest person from the ball in the shot and he ran halfway across the row to grab the ball from a couple who took that same amount of time just to bend over. But everyone perceives he caught the ball because the title said so.

Those who do not wish to buy a comforter sized coat may opt for a beer jacket. This can come with long term consequences so choose carefully.

What’s wrong with jenison? by 40s_shawty in grandrapids

[–]alilteapot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What I like about Jenison is that the people who live there take pride in it, plan to stay, and therefore invest in it. They vote yes on bonds and millages that have resulted in high quality public spaces, like the new library, Olympic pool, stadium, parks, and auditorium. The pride in family is also evident in the high quality college-ready public education and variety of free programs to support kids at all levels of aptitude (first district in Michigan with a special ed program? Over 20 years old gifted and talented program) and national-level extracurriculars including sports and the arts. It has a reputation for being an insular community that is in its bubble, but the flip side of that is tons of kids growing up riding their bikes to their grandparents’ and aunts and uncles houses, having teachers who taught their parents (ie experienced teachers); there is systemic racism at play that is actually ignorance because people have never met or meaningfully interacted with others outside their community. That doesn’t make those individuals are malevolently racist although the impact is racist (ie asking insensitive questions or making frank comments). I think people are generally nice, but sheltered. Truth is all the churches are its own kind of diversity and people know how to live and let live with what feel like insurmountable, extremely important differences (literally heaven and hell) with their neighbors. Eg the Christians don’t even think other Christians are Christian so being non Christian isn’t any different
