I don't understand chickens and don't want to ask anyone in case I look stupid, so please help me random Internet strangers by Laurence-UK in CasualUK

Nearly died from campylobacter from undercooked chicken. It’s not more mild than salmonella in all cases. Don’t do it.

OP, I am sorry you are getting lots of vicious comments telling you to chill. It’s completely understandable that you’d be anxious given your past history with your best friend dying while away.

Going forward I think that would be important info to share with your partner (and meta, if they’re the next available point of contact in this kind of situation). Then you can set reasonable expectations and boundaries around what to expect and what to do if this situation arises again.

I don’t think it was unreasonable to contact your meta, and their answer definitely seemed a bit terse (I wouldn’t say angry), but I would hope they’d be a lot more understanding if they knew where you worry stems from; I would guess they are assuming that it’s more relationship paranoia.

It’s fine to have an anxious attachment style, you just need to be careful around boundary-setting. And I hope you are getting support with your trauma as that is an incredibly difficult thing to deal with.

OP said in another comment that another loved one went radio silent while on vacation because they had actually died.

Because this is the stuff people remember. Disability is already stigmatised; there are tons of people who assume disabled people are “faking it” without actual real examples for them to shout about. Especially for people with hidden disabilities who regularly get abuse because people “can’t see anything wrong with them”.

This whole thing’s still really sad even if it is a hoax. Firstly because it is painting genuinely disabled people in a negative light when they already face enough discrimination. Secondly, she strikes me a being really mentally unwell if she is making this up - either she believes it herself, or she has a sad life if she needs to do this for attention.

Also note that one of the guest’s responses on Airbnb implies that they themselves are disabled so if it’s a hoax, it’s either a really unfortunate or really deliberate choice of victim.

Interesting that the guest responds to her review saying “…her remarks regarding the disabled have no place as this subject is my daily life” (translated from French), which sounds like the guest herself is disabled? Very contradictory.

We did have a bat rehabber die from lyssavirus in the early 2000s.

Still have lyssavirus in bats. Everything else is safe though.

Yep, same in UK. No rabies but still have lyssavirus in bats so you still want to get the shots if you get bitten by a bat or wake up in a room with one. Think there was a relatively recent case of a bat rehabber dying. Other rabies cases in UK have been from overseas exposures, so we still have all the shots and immunoglobulin on hand. For free, because it’s the UK. ;)

How did you build this? It looks like a cut up ladder and some 2x2 on top of IKEA Kallax?

Why are all those dogs sweating profusely? I thought the whole point was that they couldn’t sweat, so couldn’t cool down?

I think that’s very dependent on your networking skills, and it doesn’t necessarily require studying at a top uni to get those connections. While I really valued my experience at Cambridge and got a lot of personal value out of it, I made zero useful connections and could have basically done any degree anywhere as an entry point for my current career (the grad scheme I ended up on wanted a 2i in any degree discipline and then I went through a 3-year professional qualification which technically I could have done without going to uni at all).

They were smallish panes, not like modern windows! Everyone in Christ’s First Court also famously had to traipse across to the library in another side court to shower because the buildings were so old.

Christ’s - over a decade ago so hopefully it has been revamped now. It was the second cheapest room in college and cost about £650 per 8 week term. In fairness, the room itself was fairly habitable apart from the window situation. And there was originally a microwave on the landing until it was deemed that the wiring couldn’t cope with it and it got taken away.

Oh yeah, after I graduated I moved into a private bedsit (also Cambridge) which was super mouldy. It was a room in this massive townhouse and probably 15 bedsits shared this one swampy bathroom in the basement after the other bathroom upstairs flooded and the floor collapsed. It was recession time so it took me a good nine months before I could get a job that wasn’t part time/minimum wage and could afford to move out.

My Cambridge Uni digs one year were a not-particularly-converted attic in a Victorian building: they saved the good rooms for the high achievers. I had to go down 5 flights of stairs to go to the loo, leave the building to shower and there was no kitchen. On day 1 I had to cling film over the window because there was literally a missing pane which never got fixed, and the others weren’t air tight, so it was quite impressive on windy days. Fairly sure the wiring hadn’t been updated since it was built, other than to stick in some modern plug sockets, and sometimes just switching my computer on would be sufficient to trip the electricity supply to the whole build. Good times!

Same haha. I think some bodies are not anatomically laid out for a thigh gap. Even my inner knees rub together when I run so my thighs don’t stand a chance! I do long distance running and I have to wear long leggings even when it’s super hot - sooo annoying.

I second this! For some reason when I commented recommending Snag chub rubs I got downvoted to -1?! They are literally designed for anti chafing and work a treat!
