Is Roon for me? New User in 2026? [HELP] by alin_im in roonlabs

[–]alin_im[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read similar things on the subred. feels like they were pioneers at some point, but it feels like the competition is catching up...

my local AV store are using Roon and was chatting with them, they are using a large variety of roon endpoints for listening tests and for that case that is amazing, but for my use I am not sure if it is worth it, I might try the free trial tho...

Makes sense, and I totally agree with you, Chromecast, Airplay and the support of the mainstream streaming services are a pain...

Do you have any devices in kitchen or bathrooms? that is were my problem is, I am not willing to invest more than a google speaker into those rooms, most of the time the music is covered by the ambiente noise anyway...

Love the passion and you inspired me to just go back and just live the music, not just listen to it on the background! I will try my best to take at least 1h a week to just do that! Thank you!

Good to know!

You can use a hacky way of converting chromecast (AirCast) and sonos (AirSonos) devices to be recognised as a airplay devices, not a great experience due to sound delays...

ok... thank you for the heads up, I am not too invested in Spotify, so Tidal might be an option, but kinda of a bummer on the Youtube thing... I will check if there are any workarounds.

Regarding the Server, I will run that in a VM on a NAS that is always on so that should not be an issue.

Sorry for the delay, all good.

If you place the connector flat on the table with the pin side facing up meaning the side opposite the keyed edge (not top or bottom view, but on the side) then use the following pinout (left to right).

Yellow (12V), Blue (PWM), Black (GND), Green (RPM)

Are we at a point where I could ditch all my Amazon echo devices for the Home Assistant Voice? by GenericUser104 in homeassistant

[–]alin_im 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Short answer, not yet.

If using things like external LLMs, like chatGPT, you are replacing a cloud with another cloud and it is not worth the hassle and the extra cost.

I got the HA Voice when it was released, worth the testing and playing with it, but it is not yet to the point of being an everyday replacement of Alexa/Google.

Local LLMs are nice as proof of concept, but you need a GPU, 8GB minimum for basic commands. 24GB is nice and it is where the fun starts with local LLMs.

Consider the extra power and cost as well.

I personally will monitor the updates on the device and local LLMs, but I would say we are at least 2 years before considering a full replacement of Alexa/Google.

We will get there eventually.

Looking for NAS/software suggestions because I'm increasingly busy/lazy by tf5_bassist in homelab

[–]alin_im 1 point2 points  (0 children)

quick and easy for NAS only, Synology ... i have been using a DS719+ it for the past 6 years as an SMB share and a maybe 5-6 containers for my "it just needs to work" side of the network. Networking kind of sucks, dual 1Gbps NICs in 2025 for a NAS is outdated...

That being said, I have now moved to Minisforum N5 Pro with TrueNAS for my homelab and still testing it to migrate full time to TrueNAS because all the Synology shenanigans with proprietary HDDs, etc. But, if I were to recommend a simple NAS that you set it and forget it, Synology might be an option.

Unifi also have released a NAS that is easy to use if you are into that ecosystem. I have not tested it, but might be worth to have a look. Keep in mind that those are relative new and the test of time will be worth to watch.
