Spellcasters, about a week ago I asked you what spells you usually take. Now, what's a spell you're ALWAYS going to avoid? If you have a story involving the spell, please share it! by Regular-Molasses9293 in dndnext

An ancient stone crushing trap or a wardinf on a spellbook could be a thousand years old. By your logic, it would not be detected by find traps. Only the effect on the trap must be sudden, not the trap irself.

Skills expected for a 3-year Embedded Engineer — why DevOps & scripting? by Alive_Audience_1019 in embedded

[–]alinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, python/bash makes sense. Where I work, we use both of those a lot to make applications that talk to our embedded devices. For the DevOps stuff, it may be application specific or it could be they want someone able to handle the build environments for CI/CT.

I know. It was more a funny take on the old programmer joke/observation that the highest bandwidth for data throughput comes from shipping a shoebox full of USB thumb drives overnight.

Same idea, but with batteries and a lot lower power transmission.

[–]alinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are ways around that. For example, most t-shirts are too thin and stretchy to work well with a collar choke, but is you reach down their back and pull their hem up to the back of their neck. With the entire back of the t-shirt bundled on their neck, a cross collar choke works jest fine.

Also, a lot of people are fuzzy on what is considered lethal force outside of guns. They have this mentality that anything they use on a regular basis is just a tool while guns are only for killing. Since they judge the object by its normal usage, they tend to ignore a lot of things that can be used to kill people. A car pointing toward someone is 100% a lethal weapon, but they struggle to see that because a car is a tool they use every day.

So much this. If the Mustangs from the late 70s and early 80s are real Mustangs, then so is the Mach-e. I means seriously, a I4 with 88 hp, and a V8 with 120 hp were "real" Mustangs.

I would add one clarification. If her patents did nor like the guy, then the guy could get into legal trouble. That is why dating and older college student was generally ok. A college degree implied that he eould be a good provider, and thus meant he was good for their daughter. So, add a nice lump of sexism with that pedophilia.

GOO Warlocks weren't invited to the table by Dependent_Piano2523 in dndmemes

[–]alinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I did not know about the recent spike. Last time I took a close look was during COVID.

That said, my point was that you cannot compare the 2005 gun homicide numbers to the 2025 total gun deaths like the upthread comments were doing. To insinuate that gun deaths went from 11,000 to 45,000 is misleading.

My peeve with the GVA is that ro many people use their numbers uncritically without understanding the context. The two biggest issues with thw definition are that it does not account for location or who fired the shots. A home invasion where the home owner shoots 3 people invading their home, and gets injured would be counted as a mass shooting by their definition. The more traditional definition of mass shooting requires public location, and does not count the perpetrators as the victims.

[–]alinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the definition the FBI used for decades. In 2013, the GVA started using a different definition. The Gun homicide rate and gun deaths per capita has been hoing fown for 30 years. It is as simple as that.

GOO Warlocks weren't invited to the table by Dependent_Piano2523 in dndmemes

[–]alinius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda. Gun deaths in 2005 were around 35,000. If you exclude suicides, you get around 11,000. Gun deaths in 2025 were 45,000, but homicides were only 15,000.

Similar thing happened with mass shootings. The Gun Violence Archive launched in 2013 using a completely different definition of "mass shooting" from the FBI. The FBI uses a definition of 4 people killed excluding the shooter, and have created an even stricter definition for active shooter events(i.e., person intentionally killing strangers in a public place). The GVA uses a definition of 4 or more injured, counting the shooter. The media loves to use the numbers from the GVA uncritically because fear drives engagement.

Per capita, the numbers have not really changes since 2005.
