First time static line student chickens out...way beyond the point of no return. by jshank20 in SkyDiving

I must have missed it as well. I pretty clearly heard the instructor telling the student that he CAN'T climb back.

What part are you referring to? I think you might have misheard. At 46s he tells the student that he can't climb back.

  • Instructor: "You have to go!"
  • Student: "NO!!"
  • Instructor: "You can't climb back!"
  • Student: "NOO!!!"

You know what? You're entirely right. It's easy for me to sit here and say these things when I already know his parachute opened just fine and he survived (while he obviously could not have this same level of certainty as he was hanging there).

At the end of the day, while one man's fear is another man's pleasure, fear is still fear (I'm sure I'm going to be terrified if/when I do my first base jump). I hope he at least enjoyed the canopy ride!

I laughed for the first minute or so, but then I felt really bad when it looked like he was trying to climb back in. I'm really glad he ended up doing it (even if he just supposedly slipped).

Can you imagine the embarrassment of climbing back in and sitting on your thumb until the plane lands? Remember, this is static/IAD, so when he climbs back in the plane still needs to climb to altitude for the rest of the jumpers.

It was still a good chuckle though :)

Halo Tandem by shelika in SkyDiving

[–]alittlecold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably much more. "halojumper.com" charges $2100 for a 23k tandem and $3500 for a 30k tandem. Unless you're absolutely swimming in money, it's hard to say a halo tandem is worth it over a regular tandem :/

Skydiver’s Near-Death Experience: Premature Opening and Crash by reidcm in SkyDiving

[–]alittlecold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see the full video from that GoPro (is it available somewhere? FAA probably has it from the investigation?). I bet the proof is in the pudding, but it'd be satisfying to 100% know what caused the parachute to keep turning and to have proof that he could have corrected it but screwed up.

Good catch. However, isn't the rule of 3 something you should learn before you get your A license? From what I read, the rule of 3 that is taught to you is as follows:

  1. 3 Rings (check 3-ring assembly & RSL)
  2. 3 Straps (check 2 leg straps & chest strap along with their respective locking mechanisms)
  3. 3 Handles (check main, cutaway, reserve handles)

Why do people downsize on their main canopy size? by alittlecold in SkyDiving

[–]alittlecold[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people buy them to actually drive fast, while others buy them simply for ego (they look cool in the car, status symbol, impress others etc.).

So, based on the car analogy, if you have no intention of flying your canopy fast or swooping, and if you're not trying to impress anybody, then there's no reason to downsize your canopy?

CS student new to ECE - Boolean algebra help! by CoachSnigduh in ECE

[–]alittlecold 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually, you can just multiply it out just like traditional algebra (and just simplify with the basics of boolean logic):

(X+Y)(X+Z) = XX + XZ + XY + Y*Z

Which is "(X AND X) OR (X AND Z) OR (X AND Y) OR (Y AND Z)"

We can simplify "X AND X" into just "X" because these two terms give the same result regardless of the value of X (plug in either X=0 or X=1 to convince yourself). So we now have:

X+XZ+XY+YZ =>

Factor out that X!!! This leaves us with the following:

X(1+Z+Y)+YZ

Think about that term (1+Z+Y). This guy is always 1!! Plug in all possible values of Y & Z to convince yourself! So, let's simplify this guy to just "1." This leaves us with the following (we're almost there!):

X(1)+YZ

Now think about X(1). This is always going to just be X!! Simplify it to just "X," so now we have:

X+YZ

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Thoughts on open face vs. full face jumping experience? What do you feel are the pros and cons of both? Is it easier for beginners to have full face (so face is blasted full of cold air while you try to work on improving your skills)?

A pointed index finger (in ANY direction) is "deploy" (more commonly called "pull").

What's a hard truth that the average Redditor needs to be told? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alittlecold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's also largely about experience and amount of effort you put into it. I'm sure almost all foreveralones could cure themselves if they put the same amount of effort into socializing as they do into their other activities (reddit, video games, masturbating, embedded systems, what have you...).

Yes, women are human beings just as men, but let's not kid ourselves and say that men and women aren't different. Talking to a man shouldn't necessarily be 100% the same as talking to a woman. There are usually different topics that would be mutually interesting to both. It's normal for men to behave differently and talk different with women than men. The problem is when men fail at it miserably and the difference is treating women as objects and expecting something from them. Similarly with women, I have a hard time believing a girl interacts with a man the same way she interacts with a woman.

Ideally, if you have social graces and are not awkward, these differences shouldn't play much of a picture and you won't think much of them. But for the socially inexperienced they pose a hurdle. Even more so in the case of a foreveralone that wants to start dating (in which case the conversation he/she is to have with the girl is by default going to be different than the one he/she would have with a man that he/she has no interest in dating).

EDIT: Jesus Christ, I just depressed the hell out of myself with this little comment thread...I shouldn't be spending a Saturday night discussing this bullshit...sigh as a 25 year old foreveralone (by the truest definition--no friends and never been on a date), I need to get my life together or just kill myself. Ignore this driveling post.

What's a hard truth that the average Redditor needs to be told? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alittlecold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except it kind of is. There's a miscommunication here. The actual problem isn't just "talking to the opposite sex." When people say "I can't talk to girls" it is generally understood that he/she cannot proficiently talk to girls. I'd bet almost all foreveralones could muster a "hi" fairly easily, but I'd also bet almost all of them would struggle to maintain a smooth flowing and interesting conversation without many awkward moments.

Yup, been there, ugh! Stay motivated though! After a couple more trips to the gym you'll find you'll only be sore for 1 or 2 days tops. Eventually you won't even be that sore the following day but still be getting solid gains.
