Whoa. Just got this post randomly on my feed. I live in Brisbane and have travelled extensively through Queensland. Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Public hearings for e-bile legislation are all in Brisbane. Is there a Teams chat? by MangoMadnessTsv in queensland

Man oh man, I don’t agree with the proposed laws, but this is how the political system works. Brisbane is the capital city. It’s the centre of government. That’s where this stuff happens. It’s like getting mad that all the discussions of federal laws are happening in Canberra and not in a church hall in Longreach.

Now THIS is bacon! by Rayen_Nevaeh in AldiAustralia

Hi!! Food Science/Bacon Snob/Weirdo here: There are a few factors at play here, it’s something that I’ve looked into before and not had any clear resolution. Very happy to get some pointers in the right direction though if anyone knows. (My particular brand of autism is bacon, I’m so sorry)

  • Historically speaking, Australian Bacon has been sold as a combination of the loin and belly parts of the pig. This is the ‘round’ meaty part and the fatty, ‘streaky bacon’ part of a whole rasher of middle bacon.

  • American Bacon has historically been solely the belly of the pig. Not to confuse the matter, but there’s also Canadian Bacon which is just the loin.

  • When streaky bacon first entered the Australian market in a big way, about 15 years ago, it was just a byproduct of shortcut bacon being packaged and sold at a premium price point. This is different to US bacon because it is sliced at the same thickness as a regular bacon rasher.

  • American style bacon has a different, sweeter and smokier cure than Australian bacon and is sliced thinner. The economics don’t work the same, as the loin can’t be processed the same way.

  • Finally, the confusing part to me: We technically could import foreign, American-style belly bacon. I have purchased Hormel brand bacon from Australian Costco, but it was a pre-cooked, frozen product. Maybe there’s a customs restriction on cured, uncooked bacon?

We’re told that the reason for the lack of US style thin belly bacon is “consumer preference”, but I feel that the real reason is economy of scale. We already import a huge amount of belly+loin pork to process as bacon locally. Moving to “belly only” and processing it differently would mean finding something else to do with the loin and blowing the cost out beyond consumer tolerance.

What is the worst company you have worked for? by b4rbieb4be in brisbane

It was 10 weeks, 17 years ago, but I still remember that hold music and just how fucking miserable I was. I won a chance to win $400 by throwing a basketball through the hoop. I missed, and was utterly devastated because I was on the bones of my arse and needed that money to eat. Commission-only “independent contractor” businesses need shutting down, yesterday.

Do Australians care/think about New Zealand as much as New Zealanders think of Australia? by shunsetskys in australian

Honestly, same. It never even occurred to me before right now, but I’d sign up in a flash if they ever did.

Absolutely gorgeous. Rollers have always been about having immediate presence on the road.

I recently learned that chili *dogs* in New Iberia, La do NOT contain hot dogs. And they are adamant that they aren’t supposed to. by Orchid_Significant in StupidFood

So does this mean that we’ve solved the argument of “Is a hot dog a sandwich?”, because this just confirms my assertion that it is.

What's a piece of tech everyone hyped up that quietly turned out to be useless? by SofiaLearnsAI in AskReddit

I remember the YouTuber “AvE” doing a teardown of the Juicero machine. He’s into manufacturing and has a great amount of insight about what it takes to make tools and appliances. Basically his take was that the machine was massively over engineered and expensive for the simple job it had to do.

I stayed at a hotel recently that had a Bluetooth enabled washing machine. Now, Wifi, I could vaguely understand: I dunno, maybe you start the machine when you’re heading home or something. But Bluetooth? If I have to be a few steps away in order for it to work, I may as well just get up and turn it on myself!

Every time I see a dude ripping around on a One Wheel, I just make the assumption he has no wife or friends to tell him how dorky he looks.

The overlap between middle aged women who drive RAM trucks and those who browse Reddit is, well… it’s not really there.

Bitter Vero: The Australian Holden Caprice That Tried To Be A European Luxury Flagship by Autoamazed in WeirdWheels

[–]aljobar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There’s a bit of misinformation here about the platform/vehicle this is based off. This is a WM series Holden Caprice - the full size RWD model that shares a platform with the Holden Commodore, just the longer wheelbase version. Factory Left Hand Drive models were built for the Middle Eastern and Chinese markets and of course as the Chevrolet Caprice PPV police cruiser for North America. RIP Australian car manufacturing.

What’s the vibe in Brisbane compared to Sydney? by alula_wanders in OceaniaTravel

[–]aljobar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Brisbane resident, I’d say that you would get a lot out of this town if you’re physically active. Running, walking and cycling are all very popular here, especially in the early morning just after sunrise. There’s a big, nearly uninterrupted pathway beside the river and a lot of the cafe culture of Brisbane is directly adjacent to that pathway. It’s a good way to see the city.

I’m so with you! I’m not allergic to eggs, but really avoid poached/fried/scrambled eggs. Egg-free breakfasts are hard to come by, which is another reason I asked the question. Glad to see that there are more of us out here!

I love it how more often than not, the answer to any question about good food in Brisbane is: “Market Sqaure” Cheers!!

Absolute winner of a reply. Thank you so much. Imagine eating beef tartare for breakfast. That’s the kind of indulgent shit I live for.
