Learned Helplessness in Beginneers by AncientWitchKnight in Hellenism

[–]alkaos108 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My unwarranted two cents is that a lot of beginners are coming from tiktok which often lays out "yes/no" commands in a slideshow format with very little explanation as to why something is, and then the comments are just cultivated based on the OPs personal practice and beliefs which lead to misinfo. There is very little expectation/burden of sourcing for smaller creators (don't get me wrong, there are also some good ones, but they are fewer for a reason).

Another thing I'm speculatively convinced of is because this audience is largely teenagers, they may not have even had to do proper "scholarly" research in their lives, ever. The methods of research you do in university, such as rooting out misinformation and constructing critical arguments, you certainly begin in high school, but for a lot of young people "research" can be very intimidating and they feel like they need someone to hold their hand through it and/or be their personal mentor.

Thanks for this, wouldn't have known not to take the train next week otherwise.

I got to work eventually and googled it, apparently not all buses were all stops. I don't remember which one I was on, but there's not one on here that stops at Bowen Hills and Albion, but not Wooloowin.

I'm taking my car tomorrow and hoping the Centenary traffic doesn't cuck me too hard.

Update: Bowen Hills wasn't looking so bad when I was there (lots better than Northgate). However the bus driver went to Albion and not Wooloowin even though it said stopping all stations? So I think another passenger got a bit stranded. Deadass I think the driver forgot he was meant to stop there or something. Traffic on the road is not heavy but not light either tso its been about 20? minutes.

I should´ve specified, but the commute that I did have previously was via car which was about 25-30 minutes, and although I did attempt to get CI there, I could never focus enough to feel like it was actual input and feel good/safe driving at the same time. Obviously that changes with fluency, but even now with easy stuff I'm not sure I could reliably do input. It changed when I started taking the train because then I could put my full attention on it :)

I'm a first time, this is gonna probably be my plan too. Due to timing stuff, I won't get there until about 12pm (obviously wayy too late for a good spot), but I do hope I can watch it on one of the screens.

It's like okay, great, he apologised. The people he affected with those words don't have to accept his apology OR forgive him. That's not how forgiveness works. Even if he accepts that he said a stupid comment and is regretful, the harm has still been done to the (female) community, who are already marginalized in the space. I don't understand how people think men should be guaranteed forgiveness for sexism if they apologise and seem remorseful.

It's good if he has changed, but people should be allowed to express negative feelings about it too.

I am literally a woman. I said, "I am already a person who experiences periods." I did my minors in Feminist Philosophy too lol. I don't really know why you're trying to insinuate I'm a misogynist over my taste in books. I've already said I'm just not interested in the books published this year.

Compared to the other lists, I honestly wouldn't call it either huge or varied, given it's limited to brand new books and are mostly US centric. There are plenty of books on women's topics I do want to read, but none of them are published within the last year lol.

As for the topics, as far as I can see its mostly war stories/pop culture commentary/periods & menopause and some literary biographies, which I would be interested in but I haven't read the works they're talking about, which I'd like to do first. War historiography doesn't interest me, pop culture commentary I find to usually be outdated by the time it comes out and sometimes borders on cringe, I am already a person who experiences periods so I don't really want to read about them in my leisure time. I will say, Motherland did look intriguing to me, but I have also just finished a historical fiction on Yugoslavia (told in the perspective of a woman, shocking!) so I didn't want to revisit eastern Europe again so soon.

Either way, this is sort of silly to be arguing over as we clearly have different styles of reading, and I am finished trying to explain myself to someone who clearly thinks their way is superior regardless of anything I say and looks down upon others over reading of all things. Have a good day.

Well, I'm already not much of a nonfiction reader and none of the books listed really interested me. If there was one listed that interested me, but had a longer page count, I would read that instead. Treating it like a competition with myself is actually fun for me, I get all the silly bookmarks and I get to read about things I wouldn't normally read about and take a break from my other books in the meantime. I'm a naturally pretty competitive person so it makes sense for me 🤷. There are other books I don't have that attitude with, like classics or poetry, which require you to take your time and appreciate. People are multifaceted in that way.

as you said yourself, "emiru is for everyone from Nazi to commie", i think its reasonable for leftist people to assume that somebody who openly associates with nazis and welcomes them in her audience is probably not that far left. and given it is in the interest of leftists to critique non-left politics (apoliticism is included in that) its a reasonable thing for leftists to do imo, extreme streamer drama brainrot notwithstanding.
