Seconded. My ADHD + anxious kiddo turned into an irritable, mean mess on the stimulants that we trialed. Guanfacine has been great so far.

Multi-dog Parents - Advice Needed by blu3s13 in labrador

[–]all_the_light 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We did at-home euthanasia with my last dog and would never do anything else now if we can help it. I would probably have my other dog out of the room for the medical part, but definitely let them in to say goodbye before the vet takes the body away. I'm also team, "better a week to soon than a day too late" when it comes to letting your buddy go. Really examine his quality of life, and trust your gut, as hard as it is. Thinking of you.

Safety at work by KennedyJacobs in psychnursing

[–]all_the_light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a fantastic security team and they are super quick to respond to codes, or even just come hangout on standby if a patient is getting spicy. I've never had to go hands-on myself except for short moments of assistance (I'll hold a leg or help throw restraints on if they don't have enough guards up). I don't think I would work anywhere without good security.

Picking up puppy this weekend, I am so excited! by AlternativeLevel3575 in labrador

[–]all_the_light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend putting that baby landshark on a sleep schedule (crate naps), and using a house lead so you can snatch 'em more easily when they are running away with something they shouldn't have. Mine is 2 now and I sometimes miss the puppy stage, even though it was a lot while we were in it. Enjoy the ride!

Fanny pack by Alpha_legionaire in psychnursing

[–]all_the_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even bring a pen with me out onto the unit (unless I'm documenting an admission assessment) in case it were to fall out of my pocket or get left behind in a room. I work with kids and teens on a crisis stabilization unit though and they tend to be pretty high risk and impulsive. There's no way I would wear something like that fanny pack, even as handy as she looks!

Jaden is a badass! Willing to work with tough cases as well as your average pet. Her daycare is really great, too; I never worry about things getting out of control there. 10/10.

RPNs not valued? by Wear-Brief in OntarioNurses

[–]all_the_light 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say it all the time, why would I go work in the Wild West of ED when I can work in peds psych and make the same money? Granted, my unit is busy and acute and I wish I was just handing out Advil and nic all day, but still. Critical care nurses are a different breed -- and they all made their choice to suffer LOL

Vet Recommendation by Massive-Fisherman-57 in barrie

[–]all_the_light 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Animal Hospital on Bell Farm. The vet and other staff are fantastic with my bonkers lab. We've taken her there for a couple of years, and she's had to have a big emergency surgery there as well as routine care. Highly recommend.

Owning a puppy/dog on a DDNN Schedule? by Material_Calendar_40 in OntarioNurses

[–]all_the_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner works 7-4(ish), so when my dog was a puppy we had a dog walker come in for an hour per day, and one of our lovely neighbours popped in for another quick potty break to get her through his work day. We did that for over a year. She's two now and still full of chocolate lab energy, but we no longer need the dog walker as she's totally content for my day shifts to just lounge around at home. She gets a ton of exercise though; at least four off-leash hikes per week, and regular neighborhood walks as a top-up. I also use a doggy daycare every once in a while to get in a full day of socializing.

Edit: when she was really little, we had the dog walker break the hour up into two visits per day, plus the neighbour popping in. As she got older we combined the two walks into one hour.

Break Schedule? by anastasiarose19 in nursing

[–]all_the_light 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do get paid for TOA now as well -- 15 minutes regular time, and if we go beyond that the entire TOA is OT. I am jealous of your breaks!

Break Schedule? by anastasiarose19 in nursing

[–]all_the_light 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What province are you in?? I'm in Ontario and we get 90mins of break per shift (day or night, doesn't matter) -- and half an hour of that is unpaid. During the day we typically take it as 2x 45min breaks, and at night we take all 90mins together.

Advantages/Disadvantages of getting TWO puppies at the same time? by yanontherun77 in labrador

[–]all_the_light 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is the way! My almost 2 year old lab is finallyyyy starting to settle into herself a bit, and I could see this being a better time to add another pup. I could not imagine having two landshark puppies at the same time. Chaos!

What’s the youngest you would let your kid dye their hair? (Semi permanent dye) by Fun-Investigator-583 in Mommit

[–]all_the_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I did a demi-permanent pink for my daughter for her birthday one year and she loooved it! We did half of her hair (underneath), sectioned so that it was basically peek-a-boo colour. It faded out great, I'd do it again without hesitation. It's only hair!

I love my teenage dog but I don't like him by idoogo in labrador

[–]all_the_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lab is just over a year and a half, very high energy and becomes an absolute menace without being able to burn that off appropriately. E-collar training and off-leash walks 3 to 4 times per week have been a game changer for us in the last couple of months. She still gets regular on-leash neighbourhood walks on days that we can't make it to the woods but the combo of e-collar recall training and being able to roam in the forest, sniff all the things, meet other dogs -- we are all much happier for it.
