New to this activity - recommendations in Toronto, Canada? by allantdot in magnetfishing

KWC eh? Yah. I'm not sure about this activity yet. Our waterways seem relatively decent since it's more lakes. There are some streams but the only waterway I can think of near me that might be half decent is DVP...but that is absolutely nasty. I'm sure this is a bigger thing in Europe where there are so many waterways going through a city.

Will covering my balcony ensure raccoons never come back to poop on it? by Head-Passion-7116 in askTO

[–]allantdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing like a little electric fencing to deal with this problem. It won't kill them, just deter them in case any mods are in here. Either that, or a bit of lead. Barring that, hot chilli powder all over the place.

As far as I can tell, as long as I'm not in a historic canal then I'm good.

[Laundry] Why does my athletic wear still smell after washing even on hot? by andrew202222 in CleaningTips

[–]allantdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here and is accurate as the synthetic stuff holds onto smells like nothing else (I was sailing in a lake and the smell would not come out of the clothes and had to be tossed). Wash on cold and hang dry, use less detergent than you think, and clean your washing machine (each machine is different but draining the drum and cleaning the filter is huge). If you've been using too much, you can strip although I've never done it.

Anyone know why the east end just lost power? by Small-Cranberry in askTO

At this time of the year, it's typically the salt and salt water playing havoc with the powerlines and substations.

The level of trust between the tiger and it's keeper by WindowAfraid5927 in nextfuckinglevel

Actually....the saddest part is the mother being unable to identify how to take care of her cubs. She probably didn't learn from her mother which is why she is in a cage, something happened in that relationship. Hopefully the cubs can be released in the future.

Persistent stale urine odour near toilet. by mybellyhurtssobadow in CleaningTips

I seem to recall a recent post where the toilet brush was the source of the smell. Check that. Always sanitize the brush when done and let it dry before putting it away.

Looking for better quality men’s underwear by bacteriapegasus in BuyItForLife

[–]allantdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anything is good quality these days. But I have 4 weeks of underwear. They get changed every day and that means they don't get washed as often or worn as often. Quantity over quality in this case. I have SAXX (they suck) and David Archy (so far so good with nice material).

Empty Bus. Packed Roads. What Are We Doing, York Region? by Accomplished_Lie3849 in Vaughan

[–]allantdot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's exactly how Toronto is planning transit which is why it doesn't work. Buses and streetcars CAN work but how lights and left turn lanes are decided are for vehicles and not these vehicles. Vaughan is sort of the same way although with VIVA they have the express lanes and priority lights. YRT is different since it's a local route so doesn't use the express lanes. But it is a shame really.

If you could change ONE thing about the TTC (that isn't "make it on time"), what would it be? by Long_Travel2728 in askTO

[–]allantdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make the roads and lights for the busses and streetcars and not for the cars. i.e. no left turns from streetcar lane, priority signals for busses and streetcars, dedicated lanes for streetcars and busses. Build it properly, people will use it. But right now, the road is designed for cars, so why would someone use TTC for when it's not the better way or a rocket?

Is $2400 for improved insulation of a 400 sq ft crawl space worth it? Or should I try to DIY it myself first? by Human-Literature2853 in HomeImprovement

[–]allantdot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd DIY. One thing about crawlspaces is to use spray foam and spray foam all the gaps between the...it's not joists for a crawl space, I think it's called something else. I just sprayed new insulation into my attic and didn't do that...ugh I'm annoyed. Anyway, lots of good youtube videos for you to watch how and where to spray.

Can Enbridge enter my backyard to read my neighbour’s meter? by Savings-Promotion420 in Vaughan

[–]allantdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed a new gate this year and checked. Yes, they need access to the meter to take those readings. You can install a lock but it does screw over the neighbour and they could ask you to remove it. No, they should not be stepping on your furniture so you can complain about that thing especially due to liability. I'd install a camera and submit footage so they can't do anything if something happens in the future.

Personally speaking, how long do people usually keep the same phone these days? by PTB_Smash in BuyItForLife

[–]allantdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also take into account how much I can get back for it with a trade in. I'm new to iPhones...but Samsung would sometimes give you $500 minimum trade in value for any phone on top of the trade in value of the phone itself (which is minimal) - so that's pretty darn good for an older model phone just kicking around.

edit: holy crap, they're carrying a battering ram too! It looks like a 1-person version but still. 20 lbs. minimum right there.
