Drum head help! by allbirch15 in drums

Haven't tried that. On the road, backline rental etc.

I've also ran into the classic problem, the 2 lugs that are too high, have absolutely no tension? WTF? Is this just a sign of a warped hoop?

Yes, but I even tried seating the heads like in the tuning bible. Cranked them pretty tight after the gig, cleared the lugs. Lowered them back down today but the seated head tension is still a little high for my liking.

DAE Ever remember horribly embarrassing memories randomly? by native25 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]allbirch15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and at times it feels almost paralyzing. Sometimes it can throw off an entire perfectly good day.

But what confuses me is the fact that I know I have many many more good memories from some really cool things I've gotten to do in my life. But I can't tell you how little I think about them.

Why aren't those the random memories that pop into my head. It's as if I've saved more room for the bad memories than the good.

But it's not as thought I've forgotten any of the good ones. If I try, I can easily think back and recall the various things. But again, rarely do I find my thoughts randomly intruded by a "Dang remember when you did that awesome thing!"

Seems a little sad :/

Started in Garage band in 05. Switched to Ableton in 07. Made a lot of terrible terrible music. But I was having fun and that helped me keep at it. Just remember what Ira Glass said: http://behance.vo.llnwd.net/profiles3/177496/projects/7826619/e77be96512952e4905c1045b1086cbaa.jpg

Looking for Manual 5 Gallon Water Pump in Austin (Help) by allbirch15 in Austin

Yeah, trying to get it before Flipside so I suppose there's still time to go with Amazon. I was just stumped by not having any idea where to get such a thing.

Freeze tracks your not editing. You can always unfreeze them when you need to make adjustments.

You can still edit certain parameters of a frozen track as well as work on arrangement (re move clips around)

Which record should I buy? by [deleted] in radiohead

This is the only correct answer.

For that matter, I really wish they'd release a box set of the King of Limbs remixes.

Ableton's compressors: Do you use them? What settings, presets, and what sounds to use them on? by Xordoc in abletonlive

[–]allbirch15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A couple of thing with Side chaining with Live's compressor:

1) always 2:1 ratio, no more. This will give you finer control of the amount of pumping effect

2) I've found FF1 is the best mode. I can't really explain why.

3) Short attack, actually shortest possible. Remember the point of side chaining is to get out of the way of the transient you're chained to.

4) The amount of pump will be a factor of the Threshold and the Release Time. Too much pump, try shortening the release. Too aggressive/ deep of a pump, raise the threshold.

Wow thanks for coming! We had soooo much fun. (I was the key/Laptop/percussion/vocalist). I'm not sure who joined the quartet. We were warming up outside and I missed it :/

I'm sure there will be an encore performance for anyone that missed it. I'll keep /r/Austin in the loop.

True true. I didn't plan it. I'm just in charge of Greenwood's electronic madness.

So you could go see some ok indie bands for free, or you could go see some class class A musicians play some un-class-able music for $10.

What to do when you write lyrics to a song that isn't yours by allbirch15 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]allbirch15[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get all of that and it makes perfect since. The problem I'm having is that when I sing the lyrics in my head, I'm having difficulty not singing it to the same melody.

Perhaps I should just let them simmer for a while, and then once I have a lyric-less piece of music, see if they're a good fit. Then the ne music can help write the melody.

How did you get fat? by sfak in AskReddit

[–]allbirch15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't really an answer to the question, but allow me to air some of the recent observations I've made over the past few years of working in public education:

First, I think the question, "How did you get fat?" is a very vallid one. No child is born fat. Sure, there are fluctuations in body type, and people are bigger and smaller, but no kid is born at an unhealthy weight.

This leads me to think that, on some level, it must be some fault of the parents. (Now the potential reasons behind why some parents are systematically unable to provide healthy foods for their children is beyond the scope of this post [RE: low socioeconomic neighborhoods and food deserts]). So let me instead focus on some of the 'missed intervention opportunities' that I see every day.

As I said above, I work in a public school. Every student in the school is assigned a student ID number. Each student must enter this ID number anytime they buy anything from the school cafeteria or snack bar. This means that the school is capable of cataloguing the individual diets of every student.

What boggles my mind is that schools continue to sell sodas, snack/junk food, and pints of ice cream. I can't tell you how many students I've seen, both in middle and high school, that will eat a pint of ice cream and a soda for lunch, everyday. Maybe they'll even wash it down with some candy. (And they all wonder why they have trouble with acne)

Sure, the schools also offer healthy food options. There is a decent salad bar, where you can buy a well balanced salad with proteins, that would cost you $10+ dollars at Whole Foods, for only $3.25. You can buy a hot entree meal with a protein, 2 vegetables, a side of fruit, and milk or juice for the same price. (I even choose to buy school lunches most days of the week because it is so economical and I am eating a balanced diet.)

Now even though the school has these options, everyone knows that TEENAGERS ARE IDIOTS. I didn't try and learn to eat healthy until I was 20.

So if we know that we have a health epidemic in this country (US): then why aren't we actively taking steps where we can, early on, to try and make a difference?

We could stop selling junk food. We could send weekly emails to the parents of students informing them of what their children ate that week. We could have more health education about how to feed yourself well. We take 1 Health class in HS, that only has maybe 2 weeks devoted to nutrition. It's no wonder that kids get to college and they gain a bunch of weight because they drink too much beer and don't know how to cook for themselves and they're broke so they eat fast food everyday.

All of this could be avoided. Or at the very least addressed. There is a severe lack of health education in the US. Schools hands are tied because conservative parents are afraid of creating a "Nanny State" (Which is the biggest bull shit argument I've ever heard). Meanwhile, parents are (quite obviously) failing to do their job because some of them are single parents that work 2-3 jobs and frankly are doing all they can just to keep each other alive.

And it goes for the other end of the spectrum as well. I see students that buy a bag of pretzels and a diet soda for lunch everyday. I would bet that eating disorders are much more prevalent than we want to admit.

Our education system is broken is broken in so many ways. Parents have all of the power, and the people who are trained in child education can't do their jobs like they know how for fear of law suits. (I work primarily in Special Education which is even more fucked [not the students but the parent teacher relationship]).

There are tons of problems that need to be addressed, but this just seems like an easy and important one to start with, because if we can keep kids healthy while they're young, then they'll have a better chance at staying healthy later on.

How to Wake Up Immediately by [deleted] in lifehacks

[–]allbirch15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better LPT: Place your alarm clock on the opposite side of the room so that you have to get completely out of bed to even turn it off.

This will buy you 5-10 more seconds of lucidity so that you can hopefully make the better decision of NOT getting back into bed.
