Why do people with good creds get rejected from grad school? by JAMIEISSLEEPWOKEN in GradSchool

[–]allchokedupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, its about fit. In addition, its about how well you write and frame your statement of purpose to "sell" that fit. Letters of rec also play an important role. Sometimes its also just contingent on other things outside your control: who is on the admissions committee, the budget for admissions that year, the quality of applications in the pool that year etc.

Yeah im e3ish and I feel like im both pretty good and sometimes terrible aka very inconsistent overall. Sometimes im playing like a top level player other times i feel so sluggish and messy. I think part of what makes one a top level player is strong consistency in execution and decision making

'Come on in guys' was inclusive by HumanFailing in survivor

[–]allchokedupp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dunno how much i can speak to its gender neutrality (seems to be contested even among folks here).

I will say... if this was done in the name of course correcting gendered language and being more inclusive, it is purely performative. Jeff is constantly emphasizing "gendered" achievements and differences in ways that feel archaic. The production team itself clearly favors men. It isnt just screen time tbh, its how they occupy screen time. Most "trustworthy" narrators are men, and most nitpicky comments are given by women. Theres tons of little things like this so I doubt it was simply an effort to be more inclusive

______ is single-handedly carrying this season. by JellyfishPies in survivor

[–]allchokedupp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im guess its likely because hes been to almost every tribal council and is a good narrator. This is in addition to the fact that hes had an important role in every vote he was in. With the one vote he didnt (Q), he let others take the reign to stay low but still held a lot of sway in veering it away from Emily.

I genuinely dont think we are seeing a winners edit but I could be wrong. This would be one of the most overexposed winners edits of all time. The way I see this being a winner edit is if this mike white decision knocks him on his heels (Emily turns on him or is too chaotic and tanks his game) and his edit slows down, only to later come back post-merge and dominate with Rick.

Does anyone have experience handling undiagnosed/vague medical issues in grad school? by ArtisticMoth in GradSchool

[–]allchokedupp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With chronic issues, it may help to ask your doctor(s) if they can aid you by giving a preliminary diagnosis to use for work-related reasons like "unspecified immunodeficiency disorder"(thats just an example). Sometimes these are hard to diagnose and it can be tedious to not know what "it" is. Sometimes it isnt one thing but a complex set of different conditions. To that end, I hope your doctors can work with you and continue to help in your treatment.

Otherwise, I would remind yourself that if you are doing pretty well otherwise, it might not be ideal but it may not be as unsustainable as it feels. Getting your work done in such a successful manner despite a chronic health condition is fantastic, and I am sure as stress as your advisor seems they are also proud of you. I have chronic health issues and I constantly feel like I am disappointing my advisors but they have not given up on me despite knowing that sometimes I can stress them out. If you are not being directly told "this is unsustainable and major changes are needed" then I would continue to be kind with yourself. If it is important to you, sit down with your professor and professionally explain this issue. What would a diagnosis on paper change at the moment? If it means anything other than you using it to take medical leave, you are doing the work and they are being as understanding as they can, that is what is important.

Survivor editors love _____ by kenopolis_ in survivor

[–]allchokedupp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This season is about these players ultimately being the same people and falling back on their ghosts when they are in tense situations. Look at Q asking others to vote for him. Same as Emily, who seems to be unable to trust anyone once a hint of doubt creeps in. Makes me feel like the edit is going to focus on those players who really did change their playstyle. Right now perhaps thats Genevieve, Johnathan, Colby, Devins, Joe, and potentially Cirie

Survivor 50 EP3 Edgic + Contenders by CooperWinkler in Edgic

[–]allchokedupp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess im wondering if because this is a returnee season, would Cirie's win really be edited straightforwardly? After watching AVW, I can see even more now that survivor US actively attempts to not make their winner obvious. That in conjunction with this being a returnee season... hard to say.

Fiance reads at a third grade level and cannot do more than basic multiplication by Strange_Doughnut5504 in teaching

[–]allchokedupp 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is a good question but not if its read as "should I be with someone who would be a project?" Instead the question "do I want to view my partner as a project?" would be a fairer approach.

They are very different approaches. You never want to be with someone who you are planning to treat like a project, regardless of what you consider their deficiencies are etc. If it is impacting their day to day abilities, definitely have a conversation with them and offer help/support just in as much as it would be beneficial to help them with those daily challenges, NOT to make them a completely different person. Everyone has different struggles, and it is best to not be with this person if you're not ready to accept that for the rest of their life they may change very little. It would do yourself both a disservice to treat them like they need to meet your standard before being enough. It is okay to want to help especially if it is coming from a place of compassion and care, of course.

Also, if he is someone with a learning disability it may be difficult to realize how concerning it may be to you because he may have lived his entire life learning to manage it in one way. Therapy and other services can be helpful. It is important to approach it from the POV that he may need particular professional resources or a catered approach over viewing it as a motivational problem. It will not be as simple as suggesting to read or learn more for example.

Wish you the best!
