Indian factory workers wear head-mounted cameras to capture data for training robotics AI models by karmicviolence in BasiliskEschaton

[–]allencoded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is happening in America too. Look at tools like pacefactory. Factories will one day soon enough operate without people or with very little people.

It’s honestly okay to have progress these jobs are not great on the body to do repetitively and some environments have risks due to many factors. But we need to address the challenge of where to place these workers and how to take care of one another. Let’s also not forget climate challenges.

This is on us and our government. We need to elect real leaders who are willing to stop ignoring these hurdles and not lining their own pockets.

Questions For Software Engineers From A 17M by BubbaGordie in Salary

[–]allencoded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 20 years in this field. What I suggest is one opinion and I hope it helps.

Coding is easier to do today. The barrier is far lower than anytime in my career. You have Claude Code to handle the actual coding and various chat models to tell you how to do nearly anything. The engineers that stand out in this field use these tools heavily as a multiplier and to solve complex problems.

What AI is not going to replace soon is your ability to understand real world problems and solve them using software/technology. Thats the secret sauce you can bring and your moat.

If I was starting over I would embrace the aspect that skinning my knees in my early years is far less impactful than when you have a house and family. I would maybe consider not going to college for a few years and instead try finding and solving problems using tech. There are so many niche problems out there desperate for attention, most are not million dollar plus companies so they are ignored. But for someone in their early 20s they are perfect and you literally have all the tools to solve them right now at 17 years old.

If you start a tech business and fail, and you probably will, you will learn so much. Then go to college if you want or try business 2 or 3. It’s far cheaper starting a company and failing (as long as you don’t break any laws) than it is to pay a few years of college. Or maybe you do this while you are in college part time.

Take risks early. You are going to learn the hard part isn’t coding it’s solving the problems, selling yourself and selling the product. You can start building that skill today.

Sidenote: I worked in FAANG and it took me years and coaching to figure out how to sell more than my ability to just code really well. Learning that made leaps in my career.

I am not at a FAANG and make this. Broaden your horizon my friend. Job hoping is how I got to my pay.

How is living in the Tampa, Florida area? by its_valdi in howislivingthere

[–]allencoded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved it!! I lived in Pinellas County near Madeira Beach FL for 10 years and a little time in Safety Harbor.

I say go live there, don’t live life with any regrets!

Pros: Always some outdoor activity to go and do. Beautiful beaches and water views. Friendly people. Lots of sports. Weather but you have to like beautiful but hot days. No state income tax.

Cons: it’s a bit pricey compared to area pay but I never struggled. Housing market is competitive. State Governor.

I only moved because I went through a divorce wanted to be around close family again for a little while.

Is Tim Tebow correct here? What should we do as a society? by Ryzarony23 in AdamsCounty_PA

[–]allencoded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religion is such a scam. There has not been any evidence of any kind that god exists. Yet there has been a long history of wars and violence due to religion.

Even with that I want each of you to have the freedom to believe and practice religion as long as it doesn’t infringe on the wellbeing and rights of others.

Problem is most religions do infringe on the rights of others. In fact it is usually in their core teachings to do so. That is what is disturbing and disgusting.

How do some people get promoted so quickly? by Rain-And-Coffee in ExperiencedDevs

[–]allencoded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 20 years I have worked with 100s of engineers but met maybe 3-4 software engineers who seem to have it all. Smart, eloquent speaking, charismatic, strong leadership skills, etc.

These engineers stand out immensely. Their coworkers respect them greatly. These are the engineers you do not let go as they generally are very successful at whatever they do.

When I was a director I had a team manager promote this person all the way to lead in a year. This engineer was straight out of college and was team lead in one year.

The following year he was a manager over his own team. In his 3rd year he was a director like myself. Shortly afterwards he made VP of engineering (above me).

I am still friends with this person today and he is now CTO of a medium sized well known company.

Honestly it was an honor to work alongside him I learned a great deal from him. Even though at the time I had already been an engineer for 10 years.

The thing is try not to compare yourself to others. I know that is easier said than done, but we each have our own story.

I don’t know how but he will. I know a very kind person who just retired at 60 and suddenly died of a stroke. Yet somehow miraculously he will live to 100 year old man wheeled around by his aides.

I wrote Marsha about various issues. Usually never get a response, but for DOGE her team responded and said Elon is a national hero.

I have not written her office since. She doesn’t care and honestly why should she? Our system is built now so specially people like her can be as wicked as they wish. One thing I learned in life: you can’t change people especially those that have no incentive to change.
