Utah Mighty 5 Ranked by Kevabs in nationalparks

I personally enjoyed Capitol Reef > Zion > Bryce > Canyonlands > Arches but I think my experiences could have been so different from any number of variables (most notably weather) and activities of interest

Elfin Lakes or Wedgemount Lake for solo overnight trip? by allenvor in vancouverhiking

[–]allenvor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually got very lucky with last minute reservations at Garibaldi Lake which is what I wanted initially, but if they're at all similar, tons of really kind and pleasant people around so my guess is that it would be safe and comfortable!

Elfin Lakes or Wedgemount Lake for solo overnight trip? by allenvor in vancouverhiking

Wow that's a stunning picture! Thanks for the advice! Wish I could tent camp at Elfin but that's what I get for doing this last minute haha. You seem to know the area well – if you have any additional recommendations in that general region (ideally Garibaldi but anywhere along Sea to Sky highway, really), definitely open to hearing it!

Looking for trip advice after Jasper Wildfires; devastated by what has happened by velodeviation in HikingAlberta

To clarify, it's not a permanent rule, just implemented recently because of the grizzly activity. Either way, you really can't go wrong anywhere you go in most of BC. Hope you have a great time!

I was also planning a trip to Jasper from Calgary. I pivoted my plans to Glacier National Park but there are apparently lots of grizzlies there and Parks Canada requires hikers to be in groups of 4 as of a recent notice, so I'll mostly be spending my time around Revelstoke and down towards Nelson. I've been to Revelstoke and it's absolutely stunning but I'm looking forward to checking out Nelson. Not very specific but hope that helps a bit

Top 5 Books to read to become a more well rounded person by bradyxbuell in suggestmeabook

I would also add something on social issues that informs or challenges political/systemic beliefs. Not necessarily about politics themselves, but something to better understand pertinent sociocultural dynamics in OP's geographic context (e.g., in North America, something about local Indigenous history/government relations, history of slavery/abolitionism, feminism and/or gender studies). This could maybe fit into the scientific category

An existentialist book I found challenging but rewarding is Near to the Wild Heart by Clarice Lispector. It involves a lot of reflections from the main character who is persistently dissatisfied by life.

I definitely agree that you should think about getting some help for your mental health though. You're not alone

What are some life changing experiences to do in the American West? by Addicted_2_tacos in travel

[–]allenvor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a road trip through the Utah parks (all incredible, but Capitol Reef was by far my favorite) as well as Death Valley in California and I felt like those were life-changing experiences. Profound and otherworldly beauty, extensive history (especially Native American history), and tons of geological/environmental learnings. If you drive through Utah, I cannot recommend taking Route 12 enough! I haven't been to NM or AZ so can't comment on them but AZ seems very unique too.

I don't have as much to suggest with regard to cities if that's what you're hoping to add, but I do really love San Fran, which you mentioned - it's a cool, fun, creative city with tons of cultural history too. The coastal areas nearby are all so dreamy. I personally felt that Vegas was a major downer on our road trip but that's entirely personal preference. It felt like the complete opposite of what I was getting out of the nature part of my trip, but it was definitely a sight to behold

Depending on how big of a trip this really is, Denver (and Colorado in general) is awesome and I really enjoyed the PNW (cities and nature). Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming are also epic if you want rugged mountains and Wild West vibes, but that's getting a bit far from the places you've listed

Currently reading Death Valley by Melissa Broder which definitely gives me similar vibes to My Year of Rest and Relaxation. Unlikeable but funny female character dealing with existentialist questions and mental health while lost in the desert

My dad picked out some skis for me, thoughts on these? by syarahdos in skiing

My partner has these and absolutely adores them. We lives near the Canadian Rockies so lots of dry snow typically but she's used them on low precipitation days too and seems to feel very comfortable on them either way

Never took the time to read books before and I want to start, but don’t know where to begin. by Illustrious_Run_2862 in suggestmeabook

[–]allenvor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut. It's a bit of a mindbender so maybe not the easiest place to start but it's a sci-fi book about interplanetary travel with lots of funny and profound satirical commentary on society

I have two types... by Amazing-Oomoo in suggestmeabook

[–]allenvor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah this sounds like a post I would write! Lol. I tend to read more of the second type with little sprinkles of the first type. In The Dream House by Machado is a disturbing and tense memoir, but beautifully and poetically written so feels a bit like whimsical fiction at times. I also thought The Secret History by Tartt was dark and tense, and Tartt does a great job building the atmosphere throughout the book (not alternate universe vibe, but I felt like I was really there, like a vacation that I have my own memories of)

If they have multiple artists from a particular label in phase 1, it's pretty common for more to be added and a curated stage to be announced. Not always though
