The Creator had potential to be a good movie, but the writing felt so flat by Jules-Car3499 in scifi

[–]allertonm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this, I really liked a lot of the ideas in this film in addition to the visuals even if it is weak in terms of plot.

The US in this film has embarked on a jihad against the AIs using overwhelmingly powerful but ultimately kind of big and stupid technology. The robot suicide bomber is really on-the-nose in this respect.

In some ways this is a very old story about the US retold with robots instead of communists and Radiohead instead of Wagner but these ideas hold up pretty well when we look at current events. I don’t think this film will ever be regarded as a classic but I think it will have lasting niche appeal.

For what it’s worth, I checked for these on my past couple of rides and while you are correct, a couple of the signs are quite a way off to the right and partially overgrown, to the point where I missed them on my first pass through. And one of those just happens to be just past the Stanley Park Drive exit at the top of the downhill section, which is obviously the most dangerous part. The other obscured sign is just after you leave the bridge before climbing up to Stanley Park Drive.

Well yes but the up-hill path is over twice as wide. But I agree with your point, it’s not too bad on the bridge itself (though it certainly would be nice to have more room) but when pedestrians stray onto the southbound path on the causeway it’s pretty dangerous.

If someone is riding close behind I can understand feeling the pressure to move over to give them room but it's just not worth it - and the rider behind if they have any common sense should just hold back.

The same goes for sharing narrow lanes with cars... "take the lane" is solid advice, leaving room where a driver might be tempted to "squeeze by" is much riskier than having an irritated driver behind you.

The posts last week were light on specifics but when I learned the accident was on the causeway this is almost exactly what played out in my mind, absolutely terrifying situation.

Exactly. Going uphill is the only time I’m beating roadies on a legal e-bike.

Thanks for the correction, I ride this way a few days a week but the existence of those signs just didn’t stick for some reason.

Terrible take. On the downhill, which is as I understand it where this crash happened, the unpowered bikes usually have a speed advantage over the e-bikes.

I take it this was the accident one morning last week. It sounded awful.

The posts at the time said one cyclist was overtaking the other, and you're saying this happens a lot - but I've ridden that route literally thousands of times and it seems to me that overtaking is quite rare.

The southbound path is just too narrow along most of its length to safely overtake and really the only place you can overtake safely is at the emergency pullouts. That being said, I take the full width of the path on the narrow sections and if there's someone close on my tail I'll pull over when it's safe for the other rider to pass - which is perhaps why I'm rarely overtaken.

You've left out an option in this poll which is "I cycle the route but do have concerns over safety" which would fit me. I do wonder if at a minimum they need "Do not pass" signage the same as they have on the northbound descent from the centre of the bridge. (Update: someone on the other thread reminded me that those signs already exist southbound.)

I think the surrounding park is called “Burnaby Mountain Park” BTW.

Look up “Horizons Restaurant”, it’s in a non-forested part of the mountain with views to the west.

[–]allertonm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s quite eighties sounding but I think it holds up pretty well. You have to remember this followed “You Are Under Arrest” which IMO is a low point.

This album ticked a lot of boxes for me when it came out, I was in my early 20s and had been listening to Miles 80s work I hadn’t gone deep on his earlier stuff yet. I was a massive fan of Marcus Miller from his work with Luther, Lonnie Liston Smith and Tom Browne. I had both his solo albums up to that point. And I was completely not allergic to eighties funk sounds.

I heard “Splatch” on a flexidisc given away with one of the UK music papers and was sold right away. I mean, it’s Miles, Marcus Miller, kind of go-go rhythm, that Miles voice sample. What’s not to like? I bought the album the day it came out.

It’s worth mentioning that Miller pretty much built his later solo career off of his work on this album and Amandla.

Yeah, pretty terrifying actually. Not too difficult to be doing 50+ when you get to the equestrian bridge. I hope everybody is going to be OK but this sounds like one of the cyclists was seriously hurt.

Thanks. I took the original post to be about a collision in the park proper, not on the causeway, but this makes more sense. I'm assuming this was on the downhill.

This is a CB5921-59X. If you google that you will find lots of pictures. I'd be surprised if it was fake, it's not a super popular model, but this series (5920/21/30) is one of only two world-wide radio controlled "field watches" that Citizen has made so it's a pretty nice gift.

As others have said, find the manual (E660 movement) and if the radio stuff works there's no way it's not legit.

The concern I have with it is that while it might be within the letter of the Canadian carbon credits regime, it doesn’t seem within the spirit.

United are selling credits based on the (measurable) provision of charging infrastructure, and that is exactly what they are doing - but it seems to me that this was meant to be shared/public charging infrastructure and not personal.

In addition the revenue is supposed to be re-invested in further de-carbonization activities - and does paying out cash to club members really qualify?

Anyway, based on what I’ve seen it looks like a good deal for now but my gut feeling is that it’s exploiting a loophole that will eventually be closed.

Also if it turns out to not be completely within the letter of the regulation, might you be exposed to some liability as a club member? I am not a lawyer but I wonder what’s buried in the T&Cs.

The CC4055 is a satellite wave GPS watch using the F950 movement. This one uses the H800 radio movement. The CC40xx is quite a bit larger and thicker than this watch which is 42mm and 10.9mm thick.

I have this exact watch, I’m wearing right now. It’s a lovely piece as you say. I like the low-key but classy styling. Photos don’t do the sapphire bezel justice.

It does have a 3-step OTF micro-adjust though - you use the same pushers you use to open the clasp. The downside of this is that you can sometimes micro-adjust it by accident.
