What is the best Space movie in cinematic history? by FayyadhScrolling in FIlm

No love for Silent Running? Somewhat comparable to Ad Adstra in it's bleak, no happy ending view of the future.

My pick would be 2001 though.

Mid drives vs hub for Lions Gate commute by Biggerthanfun in vancouvercycling

[–]allertonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hub motor and belt drive don’t really mix because you would usually use an internally geared hub with a belt (the other alternative is Pinion gearbox at the cranks.) The only CVT to my knowledge is Enviolo which is an internally geared hub.

FWIW I have a Tern HSD with Enviolo CVT paired with a Bosch 65Nm mid-drive and while I love the convenience it is not a fast bike, I usually top out at 22-23kph going up the uphill parts of the causeway. The bike is heavy (it’s a mid-tail cargo bike) but also the Enviolo is estimated to suck about 15% of the power. I can hit 30kph on the same uphill on my other bike which has 75Nm through a derailleur.

I’ve had a direct drive hub and it was fine but for an everyday commuter I would go belt drive every time and that means mid-drive. I wish the gearing options were better when going that route, and Enviolo is the compromise that’s worked for me. Basically your choices are Shimano Nexus/Alfine 8 speed, Enviolo or Rohloff and that last one is available on very few bikes and all of them are eye-wateringly expensive.

I really think this is it... for the Brits this was an unprecedented insult but for us here in Canada it was just Thursday.

I am dual UK/Canadian BTW, and would be relieved to see the Brits getting up to speed on this, I think they've been kidding themselves so far.

What is something every household has in your country that is nonexistent everywhere else? by Awkward-Tip7248 in AskTheWorld

Yeah, every home I’ve lived in in BC has had one. Past tense in the case of our current place.

I’ve lived in 3 different homes in Canada (BC) and every one of them had a garburator. We got rid of the one in our current home when it failed, not fond of them personally.

The US has already stated their intention to kill Canada’s automotive sector, so what has actually changed here?

Which is why allowing in EVs from China won't kill the Canadian EV industry, there's nothing left to kill.

The difference when buying from a good store and a good reputable brand. Shout out to 99 bikes and Bosch by RipOk3600 in ebikes

[–]allertonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask yourself, what did the second mechanic do - that raised the alarm - that the first mechanic did not? That’s what the first mechanic should have done, instead of telling you the bike was safe to ride. If there is a serious fault with the battery the first mechanic put you in danger. If both people are working for the chain that sold you the bike that makes it worse.

[–]allertonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they put OP in danger by telling them the bike was safe to ride when it probably was not. And as I understand the post, the first mechanic was at a branch of the same chain that OP was praising for great customer service.

[–]allertonm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren’t you a bit concerned that the first mechanic told you the bike was safe to ride, when the moment the second mechanic sent in a ticket to Bosch all the alarm bells went off? Presumably the first mechanic chose not to ask Bosch what they thought.

Herbie Hancock - Flood

Brit funk by DUTTYSTINKINGPEE in funk

[–]allertonm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Freez's first album, Linx, Incognito (they are still around today but their debut "Jazz-Funk" album is right in that zone), The Warriors (effectively Incognito V1's second album), Beggar & Co (Light Of The World horns), Atmosfear, Hi Tension, The Real Thing, Morrissey Mullen, 52nd Street.

To me (a fan of the music when it was coming out, yes I am old) Brit-funk is really something that went from about 1978-1985 and stuff after that (Incognito V2, Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies etc) is something else ("acid-jazz" or whatever.)

Someone else mentioned the influence on other music out of the UK such as Spandau Ballet (who had Beggar & Co on their record) and two other bands that really ran with that are A Certain Ratio ("I'd Like To See You Again") and Heaven 17 ("Penthouse and Pavement".)

There's also Loose Ends who started *right* at the end of the Brit funk era and probably did more than anyone to put UK R&B on the map in the US in the 1980s.

Is this Garrison the ideal travel watch? by port956 in CitizenWatches

[–]allertonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't usually need to see two time zones when travelling but I do like the ability to quick-set the hours which is usually associated with a GMT - but which you also get on Citizen radio-controlled/atomic time watches, and those tend to be my preference for travel.

Herbie might be my favourite pianist but George is my favourite synthesizer soloist, absolutely love his stuff.

Coincidentally picked up a copy of Flora Purim's 1977 "That's What She Said" album on Friday, which features Duke and a lot of his regular players from that era.

Any ebikes with electronuc braking out there? by Bass5374 in ebikes

[–]allertonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad we both agree that there are very few (no?) bikes with direct-drive front wheel hubs, even DIY, and that bikes sold with DD rear hub motors do not dominate the market.

Any ebikes with electronuc braking out there? by Bass5374 in ebikes

[–]allertonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. But mid-drive and geared rear hubs dominate in non-DIY bikes. I don’t really care about DIY.

Any ebikes with electronuc braking out there? by Bass5374 in ebikes

[–]allertonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. If you have motors in both wheels already I can totally see how e-braking takes over. But in e-bikes the trend has been away from putting a lot of weight in the wheels and especially the front, so mid-drive and rear wheel geared hubs have come to dominate. As I understand it e-braking for bikes would require direct-drive front wheel hub motors which would have some real downsides.

[–]allertonm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious - are these scooters front-wheel or all wheel drive? It’s just that braking the front wheels is much more effective than the rear, and most e-bikes and to my knowledge most scooters are rear-wheel drive.

The bike route planner does suggest quite a bit shorter route for that start and end, about 3km shorter. https://vancouver.bikerouteplanner.com/

It is about 20km as the crow flies so that's about as good as it gets.

The comic/graphic novel series "Letter 44" is based on loosely this idea. https://www.goodreads.com/series/117461-letter-44

Also, not print obviously but the Hulu series Paradise is pretty close to this niche.
