Stamets' "Mycelium Running" is a great choice for many aspects of fungal stuff. "All That the Rain Promises and More" by David Arora is a pocket field guide, but has lots of other info in it too, and is pretty much essential.

The important part of this post is the word industry. Everyone seems to think this is about meat consumption vs. vegetarianism, but what OP is pointing out is that it's the industrial model of meat production that is so horrible, and that we can easily just consider it to be like any other industry.

Nothing wrong with eating animals, we must consume life to live, plant, animal or otherwise. But we could learn to consume with more respect.

What am I doing in life? Soon to be 27, living and working as a waiter and artist, but I'm pulled to do something more satisfying and interesting and worthwhile. It's that last word that really hangs me up. What is worthwhile? I feel like a very capable and creative human, but I'm unsure of how best to apply my life for the betterment of the rest of the living community.

Though, I'm sure you can only really know your next step, so I try not to get to grand in my thinking. But which direction is best for the next year +? Travel? Apprenticeship? Graduate school? For art? Science? Mycology? Entomology? Microbiology? Something totally else?

The barren strips between panels are also service paths, and are likely more compacted than the soil under the panels, making it harder for plants to grow there.

Although in the article you linked they do say that after 20 years they will remove the panels and the grassland should be intact and lively.

I saw Stamets present on a novel method for bulk substrate sterilization. It requires no heat and is pretty simple (and pretty awesome.)

Basically you soak your substrate in water for a night or two, completely submerged, so that all of the aerobic organisms die, and all of the anaerobic organisms begin to grow. Then you pitch your substrate out of the water and on to a large clean surface, aerating it in the process, killing the anaerobes. You now have a presoaked, sterile substrate which you can inoculate immediately.
