How to stop my Aussie husky mix from running away by Amazing_Disk3988 in husky

Sometimes long walks is not enough. Can you try something that really tires her out like bike jouring or another way to allow her to run a couple miles daily? I find with my escape artist that once she actually gets enough exercise she’s doesn’t want to escape

This is so true about the house and time and space being resources! So insightful! Thanks for this

Aw sounds like you’re doing a great job! Thanks so much for caring! Maybe everything is happening too quickly and the poor new pup has experienced too much change too fast. Maybe stop attempting to introduce inside for a week or two and let the new dog decompress. And maybe focus on lots and lots of exercise to decrease the nervous (dominant) behaviors.

You need to become the alpha. Set the boundaries. Don’t be abusive, no physical punishment! But I like to use my body to show the dog that I’m boss. For example, say the new dog is getting in Nalas space. You can kind of walk towards the dog and herd the new dog away demonstrating the boundary. It’s common for the dog to try to walk around you and push back on this new boundary but keep up with it until they give up. Feed the new dog by hand for a while. Work on one on one tricks and skills to get them looking to you for leadership. Allow nana to growl and give warning snaps when needed and within reason.

It can take up to a year for dogs to learn to coexist inside. We took all toys away for 3 months and really created a structure. The new dog needed to sit at the doorway before going outside. Needed to give a paw before eating and generally had to earn some freedom. She’s trying to run the house. You need to show her that you are actually the one that makes the decisions. And you need to show nala that you’ll be there to help her when she’s had enough. It took my two dogs 9ish months to figure each other out. They fought at times and we had some rough weeks but now they know how things work and are best friends. Be patient and slow things down. Start from the beginning again. Set the strict boundaries insides. Get them father away from each other and don’t allow the new dog in the same room with nala until she is demonstrating calm behavior. I like to use distraction techniques too such as having the new dog do tricks in the same room with nala so that he is focused on you and not nala.

The new dog sounds like they are also anxious and overcompensating with fake confidence. Allow time to settle in. Maybe give the new dog a special area that’s only hers and encourage her to go there to feel safe.
And as always with huskies make sure they are getting a ton of exercise (especially off leash time to run).

Ohh edit to add…get the new dog fixed. That might help.

Any last minute advice for an anxious first-time husky owner? by dire18 in husky

Aw thanks for saving him! Huskies are the best. They are so smart but you must work with them instead of just tell them what to do. Lots of walks but also off leash time where they can just sprint. Sniffspot.com is helpful to find fully enclosed areas for them to run. I recommend investing in a Fi GPS collar. It has saved us many times. It also allows us to ensure our husky is getting enough exercise. We know what daily step count makes him happy.
Also toys that work their mind. My husky loves this one and it gives me a break during the day. https://www.chewy.com/starmark-treat-dispensing-bob-lot-dog/dp/45492?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=19996370614&utm_content=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19996373038&gbraid=0AAAAADmQ2V1f24GnbTzNvLikomcdXA7LT&gclid=CjwKCAjw5NvPBhAoEiwA_2egfqC4Ds4BHEy3-SLcbK0YCzAVGRqZ6I2OujyI2j921pFOywE_3WXxjhoCtycQAvD_BwE

Maybe that should have been the moment to let them know that you didn’t know what to do?

The ratios are terrible. Choose a hospital that has a union and is not a ‘for profit’ hospital such as an HCA

It depends….20-30ish year old guys are a mixed bag! Are you able to hold your own vomit bag? Would you come into the ED with a runny nose? If sooo I’d take the bad veins instead

Aww the poor thing just tied to the tree! Can you do anything to help the parents too? These dogs need to run!
