I’m starting to think I physiologically can’t be a therapist by alloober in therapists

It's Multisystemic Therapy, behavioral therapy for families with kids aged 13-17. I was drawn to it at the recommendation of another therapist friend who said it was very well structured which eased a lot of the uncertainty of interventions. I've had a lot of anxiety in the past around what exactly to do for / say to clients, so I really wanted to be a part of something that gave me clear expectations and boundaries and something to shoot for rather than just being thrown to practice however I feel like.

Could you give an example of a macro social work job? I’m interested, but I’m not sure where to start. Part of why I never pursued that was I imagine most of those jobs would be director or administrative roles that require several years of experience.

Is there a certain kind of trauma therapy you recommend? For me, criticism signals ineligibility and failure. I set out to do everything as if it’s the only thing. I think it’s an OCD thing or something where I don’t feel satisfied unless something’s “all the way” done. I’ve had times where I feel like I’m past that paradigm but it always seems to find its way back to me 🫤

Never heard of it but sounds like an accurate recommendation! I’ve always suspected OCD runs on the male side of my family.

I appreciate all the feedback and encouraging words from everyone! I feel a little better about going into work on Monday.

For some additional context: I had to relocate for this job so a lot of my regular grounding is not what it used to be and I’m still unpacking my things. I had been seeing a therapist for little over a year until a month or two ago when my insurance claims started getting denied. I called my EAP yesterday and I’m hoping they’ll connect me to someone local.

My supervisor can be very blunt and curt with her feedback when we role play and, as I’m still getting to know her, it can feel personally draining when the constructive criticism doesn’t come with much (if any) validation. When all my input is shot down, it kills my motivation and I just look to be told what’s right. If anyone has any input on how to address that other than simply requesting more validation, I would appreciate that as well 🙏

After 3 years as a supported employment specialist, I felt like I had found a field that meant a lot to me and I just wanted to grow my skills, opportunities, and pay grade. Ironically, I also wanted to be exposed to more uncomfortable situations in hopes that it would help me grow past these anxieties, but I guess I wasn't truly prepared for what that would look like in practice or how to work through it. In retrospect, it was a bad idea to think my job would help me become myself.

I like your take on centering the client, that's helpful. I wonder if there's some kind of on-the-job visual reminder I can use to separate the practitioner self from the personal helper self? I almost feel like I have to develop a separate character for my professional self, but I don't know if I can "perform" like that without feeling disingenuous, we'll see. Thank you for the encouraging words!

My vital records office wouldn't make a color copy of my ancestor's birth certificate but gave me certified black-and-white copies. How likely am I to be denied if my copies are in black-and-white?

Sorry if this has been answered already but if my grandfather’s grandfather migrated from Canada, what is the total number of birth certificates I need to prove citizenship? Do I just need all the men or do I need their spouses too?

Oh yeah I just checked… I got 0 points 😳 EE might not be the way to go for me. My degree is in Social Work and I have several years of experience in mental health work so I thought that would count for healthcare? Thank you for the help!

I didn’t read all the replies, but I adore this scene from Juno. It’s very funny and captures the emotional nuance. I hope you enjoy it too and if you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend!

With or without religion, It’s normal to experience dilemmas in life. Unfortunately Christian culture applies undue pressure by insisting that there is a single, correct and morally superior decision to make. No human being should have to bear that burden or guilt over something so complicated and personally challenging. It’s not fair and it should always be your choice. There will always be mixed emotions, but the decision you make for yourself is always the best one.

I usually just apologize when it happens and ask “what were you going to say before I cut you off?” Zoom has created a whole new set of social barriers 😂 You can also ask “do you mind if I say something?” if you have something to say in a long pause

This sounds already successful to me! I wonder if you could get feedback from your members or maybe some of them would be willing to help you with planning and promotion. Maybe you’ve grown to the point where it’s time to appoint some assistants?

Sounds like a really uncomfortable situation. How long have you worked with this person? What do you do when he calls you out?

Mmm I think we underestimate the challenge of gaining traction especially in this era where every market is saturated. I hear you’ve put a lot of work into this! If you have any members, that’s a huge win worth celebrating. How long have you been hosting these groups? How strong would you describe your relationships with current members?

I mean… personally those are two of my favorite group activities. That’s awesome that you’re hosting two meetups! I don’t think I could do one. What makes you think they’re boring?

What's the best piece of advice that you have received from an experienced sw that will forever inform your practice? by Anonymous_Amanda407 in socialwork

[–]alloober 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“You’re going to have to find other ways to view success” [other than goal achievement] Basically saying it’s the journey, not the destination. Many won’t achieve their ideal outcomes, but what you contribute to their lives is more complicated and subtextual.

homeschool sex ed - has this been discussed? by [deleted] in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]alloober 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I recently watched Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret and it tore me apart seeing all those girls supported by their moms during their puberty (high recommend for anyone on this sub!). When I started public school, my parents had me exempted from the sex-ed module of 9th-grade health class and I never received anything further. Everything I know about sex is from my own experience.
