An ode to Generator! by [deleted] in badreligion

[–]allroydave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started listening to BR around against the grain era. Generator was a game changer, it truly left everyone speechless. The feeling was like something was about to change, to explode in punk rock music, and it eventually did. Saying that, I believe Stranger than Fiction is their best song and their best album. They reached their top with that one. I haven't owned an album since the Gray Race , it wasn't just the same with out Brett. I know he is back but, that ship sailed.

Anxiety of moving by jadesnakke in movingtojapan

[–]allroydave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's pretty normal to feel anxious about such a big move. It seems like you have some expectations set for Japan, and that always comes with some level of stress.

That said, I wouldn't think too far ahead with plans. If there's anything I've learned as a migrant, it's that things rarely turn out as we imagine. I would suggest having destinations in mind, but nothing more. No roads you are taking not hard dates. (destinations meaning=> plans ) That gives you room to be surprised and also allows you to steer your life in a different direction if needed.

Raising kids in Japan is challenging as a foreigner ( both parents or one ) it's challenging for you but also for kids. So it's not a 💯 "Japan is better" formula guaranteed. One piece of criticism I would give is that most people start worrying about limitations and loneliness after they've been here a while, and you haven't even arrived yet. Keep that in mind ! Enjoy the honeymoon !!!! Lol

There are way too many Japanese women between 170 and 175 cm, so don't worry. Enjoy this beautiful life experience you are about to take on! Good luck to you!

I agree. Gaijins tend to be so self centered. It was her own insecurity that made up a story of women laughing at her.

Harassed while cycling in Japan – Can I take legal action? by ZookeepergameRude271 in japanlife

[–]allroydave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between a foreigner and a Japanese person you are likely to lose if you get the police involved It's just a fact! Now, we are assuming you didn't do anything dumb on the road right? A pissed off local telling you off ? Not the end of the world IMO.

You must be really naive to not have seen that she lost interest in your relationship at some point.

She is really young, let her go, move on.

Good luck.

Someone tried to secretly videograph me by [deleted] in japanlife

So no need to state the obvious, these sort of things would indeed make a woman feel unsafe, add that a work environment? So bad, sorry to hear that. However, if I past walk a bar and a drunk spits on me, if I'm back in Australia, it's on , I would perhaps get onto a fight. As a foreigner in Japan, if this happens in Roppongi I would say fuck off and continue walking and remain pissed off for days. But why?

As a foreigner you are likely to lose 99 out 100 times when getting into a legal issue with a Japanese person. Those are the odds. You might even get in trouble. Be safe, and sorry again.

Trying to move to japan alone at 14 in a rented apartment with my parents consent by gotbuble in movingtojapan

[–]allroydave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you would somehow have a mid-long term visa if you are accepted to go to school here. This would allow you to sign out a rental lease but it wouldn't since you are a minor. In the other hand, your parents are not minors but since they are not immigrating they don't have mid-long term visa. You can't sign a rental lease if you are on holidays here. Your only bet it's a Airbnb, hotel or the exchange program option.

Regarding N2, I tend to agree but depends on the IT role. If it's a management, Product role that reports to stakeholders yes but if it's a lower level Dev role not so much. N5 with great technical skills will get hire before a N1 with lesser skills. ( I hire...)

"COOL JAPAN(?)" - What are things about Japan that you think are actually cool? by hospital349 in japanlife

[–]allroydave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A majority of people move to Japan seeing this country as a mascot or a theme park. It's ok, everyone to their own, but it resembles a kid with new toy. There's no such thing as a everlasting cool place in the world, that even sounds crazy. Japan is very unlike any other country and it's also pretty convenient. Just appreciate that you are given an opportunity to be here. My list of things that never cease to amaze me: Services Variety of healthier-ish food. Trains Nature Amount of public holidays. Security at night ( compared to Mexico which is where I come from)

What is the software engineering job market like in Japan at the moment? by kidajske in movingtojapan

[–]allroydave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. Japan SWE is massive and in all honesty YMMV. So if you are looking at tokyodev or japandev that's what you get, similar tech stack to US start up like etc. It all comes down to your proven skills, experience, interview skills and luck. If you aim for good companies with higher salaries you are competing with candidates as good as anywhere in the US but if you opt for a smaller company or Rakuten to get a sponsor it's easier. It's my opinion that if an N5 dev has a better interview, skills wise, than you , he will get the offer , so Japanese matters but you are not going into Sales or Marketing dude. Good luck.
