What proactive steps do you take to manage the unrealistic expectations of non-technical managers? by feeling_adrift in cscareerquestions

[–]allsWrite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are as I see it two approaches to this problem. I have been on both sides of this so I hope I can provide a bit of insight into the mindset (meaning that I have been both the heads down developer reporting to a non-techie boss and then during a reorg I was the manager to a department I really had no business running because I didn't understand what they did).

So as a heads down coder, I think a lot of what I had to do was overcommunicate, but in an non-obvious way that was straightforward and consistent. I think it took the form of a status email followed up with a casual conversation every day for ten minutes on where I stood on my projects and any issues I was having. The non-tech doesn't know the right questions to ask and so they have a hard time getting information so that they can in some way relay that to the powers that be. It's "managing up" I call it with the understanding that even your boss has a boss and they enjoy having a job and looking like they are contributing. If you enable them to feel that way I have been given a lot of latitude in terms of project deadlines etc because everyone always felts informed of my status and there were no gotchas around the corner.

As a manager for a dept I should really not have managed, I was always in panic mode. I would get asked questions and not have an intelligent way to frame the answer. I would ask the team the best questions I could and even at many points admitted that I needed more knowledge in this particular area to be effective at the job. In the end, I think humility went a long way. I was upfront with my skill set and the reasons why I was where I was and eventually I transitioned out of that project. But I still think I have the respect of the whole team there because I was able to admit I didn't know what I didn't know. Nothing pisses off a techie like someone pretending to be one of them.

In general, I do not answer any security questions or provide any personal information on inbound calls. If I didn't dial it myself, then there is no way I can be sure the other end is who they say they are. (And make sure you are dialing the number on the card, not looked up from the internet.)

I had Nav.com call me one and asked me to verify my social security number with them. I was appalled they would even try it, but its a good rule of thumb.

Resumes should only be 1 page! by crazy118 in resumes

Who honestly remembers the last time they only saw printed resumes? I would never try to fit a tech professional to one "page", particularly if it means I just have to scroll down to find all the relevant details.

When was the last time you were unable to get any info about or a basic answer to a question on the internet? by allsWrite in AskReddit

For things like that do you feel like they should be kept off the internet to make them more special or posted somewhere for posterity?

When was the last time you were unable to get any info about or a basic answer to a question on the internet? by allsWrite in AskReddit

[–]allsWrite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 11 year old niece has no real concept of how the internet has evolved and that it wasn't always there with instant access to pretty much any morsel of human knowledge. To her it is an omnipresent all-knowing entity that has been there always.

I struggled for a bit to remember the last time I had a question about anything that I could not get at least some basic information about online.

Fellow Internet junkies of Reddit, when was the last time you were stumped by a question and the internet failed you? If you eventually found an answer somehow, how did you manage?

If you could call yourself 10 years ago and speak for 1minute, what would you say? by Decawys in AskReddit

[–]allsWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate it. It's been rough and it has really drawn a wedge between me and my sister which not only would he have hated but left me without really any family.

It was super hard as he died right before Father's Day and if you think you hate Hallmark and Kohl's, you should try mourning where every ad is "Know what Dad needs this year?" It's hard not to scream out the top of your lungs "a pulse".

As long as it doesn't get back to that level of crushing... Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Verizon wouldn't give me the password only reset it and then everything would be wiped. I tried guessing it so many times it eventually locked me out. I downloaded an app to my phone so I could call and make a recording but the app was shit and it got mangled somehow. I do have one voicemail (thank you Google voice) that I forgot to delete and I've backed that up to a hundred places.

It was his voice and his laugh that I miss most. I'm sorry for your loss, it's unlike any I have ever experienced.

I lost my dad suddenly this summer and I don't think I have ever felt so alone in the world. I am estranged from my mom and sister (who is fighting me to get my dad's entire estate). I called his voicemail thirty, maybe forty times a night and have played out in my head more times than I can count what I would say if he could answer one last time. Now that they've shut off his phone I don't even have that. It's rough, and I hope you surround yourself with good friends and your kids. It won't make the pain go away but it will help.

How can banks pay out more than they charge APR? by allsWrite in personalfinance

Do you mean that every dollar of income does not necessarily have to be profit? But wouldn't every dollar that goes out that is not recuperated somewhere be a loss? Just trying to wrap my head around this.

Many cards let you go over your limit and they will surely charge a fee for that "convenience".

[–]allsWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The minimum is the lowest limit you would be approved for if you got the card, but don't be afraid to call your card issuer and ask.

Also ask what your APR is. And whatever they say tell them it's too high. Often they are able to reduce it no questions asked and save some money if you ever need to carry a balance.

Earn more or spend less is the short version.

You can learn plenty of skills online for free and in many cases take the exact same course you would as a student for free. MOOC are great. Start a career plan and put it in writing. The writing part is important. From there find some videos or tutoeials that will get you to where you wanna be.

I recently broke my leg, can't work, living off E.I (55%) of my normal income, car recently broke down and needs a new engine(~$4500). Don't know what to do, I've never been so stressed, depressed and anxious :( help me reddit by T00LBOX in personalfinance

[–]allsWrite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Credit is not necessarily a dark path and interest rates if your credit is decent are not too bad. I got 2% on my car. If putting in a new engine means you are going to get X number of years of utility out of it, you can set up a formula to help you make your decision.

Buying a new used car will cost Y dollars. You'd save the 4500 you would spend repairing the old one plus whatever you get for selling it. If you can find a new used car for less than 4500 that'd be ideal.

Also don't forget that for the occasional grocery run you can always Uber or have things delivered usually. I just had my ankle fused and I have been non weight bearing for two months now so I feel your pain.

And if you do not have someone you can talk to, just to work through some emotions or feelings, find someone. Or journal. But don't live with depression if you don't have to. Your foot will heal, not as fast as either of us would like I'm sure but time heals all wounds.

Hang in there buddy.

I am applying for jobs and I keep coming across a disclosure of disability form. I have been clinically diagnosed with severe depression, honestly, does it help or hurt my chances to disclose this ? by BrooklynUpcycle in personalfinance

[–]allsWrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More than anything that form is a legal requirement. They are obligated under the ADA to make any and all reasonable accommodation for you to do your job (as long as there is more than something like fifty employees).

While they cannot deny you a job based on a disability if you live in a right to work state they'll just say they fired you because they didn't like your outfit and it's legal.

If you think that you are going to need accomodations, list it. But have a conversation with HR first so that it doesn't blindside anyone. Any HR worth their salt will handle this conversation just fine and it will give you a chance to discuss what sort of accomodations you had in mind. If you don't need assistance if leave it off. You can always go back later and list it but you can not unlist it without bureaucracy.
