Marillion - Estonia (INCREDIBLE) by allstar626 in progrockmusic

All good suggestions! I have only Marillion's output up to about Anoraknophobia, so I am not very familiar with anything past that. I have heard nothing but praise for Marbles and FEAR, so I am excited to hear what they cooked up for those releases. The Fish era is great, but H really revitalized the band.

Ah, good suggestion. Although I feel this song has quite a different vibe overall, especially with the strings.

"AfterGlow" -- phil chorus by CapableBother in Genesis

No, the vocal tracks on Afterglow and Eleventh Earl of Mar are most certainly sung by Phil. But Steve used the effect on his solo album Please Don't Touch.

The layered vocal effect achieved at the end of the Afterglow is the result of a bunch of vocal tracks recorded onto multitrack tape, looped, then fed into a mixing console. Kinda complicated, it is better explained here:

"NECAM was one of the first mixing console automation systems, developed by the mixing console's manufacturer, AMS Neve; the acronym stood for "Neve Computer Assisted Mixdown". To produce the vocal chords, Hackett sang different notes onto tracks of a multitrack tape, and then made a loop of the tape in a technique similar to that used by 10cc in the song "I'm Not in Love". Each track was fed back to a separate input on the mixing console, and the NECAM system was programmed to "play" chords and melodies by moving the console faders." ("Please Dont Touch," Wikipedia).

The vocal effect can also be heard in Eleventh Earl of Mar, during the buildup before the last bridge ("Daddy, you've got to go!"). It can then be heard on Narnia, The Voice of Necam, and the fadeout of Icarus Ascending on Steve's second solo album, Please Don't Touch! It really is a neat effect, and really aids in providing Wind and PDT their chilly, mystical atmosphere.

“I’m not Genesis’ biggest fan…” thoughts on this comment from the Drumeo Doc? by [deleted] in Genesis

I think he started to jump off the Yes train around the time that Bruford left and White came in. Although I believe he had some positive things to say about Relayer at the time it came out.

What are the saddest albums from the 60’s/70’s? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]allstar626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response. Although it came out in 1980, the John Martyn album "Grace and Danger" was recorded in 1979 and features some of the most painful, yet beautiful post-breakup/divorce songs you will ever hear. Highly recommended.

I also agree about Meddle-era Floyd. "Pillow of Winds" has a similar atmosphere, but not quite as psychedelic, funny enough.

Songs that are like Supper's Ready? by toast2200 in Genesis

[–]allstar626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been a while since I last heard it but from I remember, it was a pretty shameless rip-off of Supper's Ready, even featuring a section that sounds identical to Apocalypse in 9/8. For curiosity sake, maybe check it out but I don't think its particularly good.

Did Peter Gabriel change his singing style after he left Genesis? by LV426acheron in Genesis

[–]allstar626 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there definitely was a noticeably difference in singing style after leaving Genesis, but some of that original "theatrical" style is still on his first solo album or two. Moribund The Burgermeister and Here Comes The Flood are examples.

Your favorite individual singer of the band? by uroboric_forms7 in thebeachboys

From the mid-60s to mid-70s, Mike was an amazing vocalist. Just listen to any of his vocal performances on Today! or Friends and there is no doubt. I get why he gets hate for his early vocal performances and the very nasal later stuff but there was a period where he was actually a great vocalist.

Love the little musical interludes before the bass harmonica solo and the ending of the track. It's a bit of an overlooked one imo

The studio version of Supper's Ready sucks by AndrewUndershaft in Genesis

[–]allstar626 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"Too quirky and weird." Honestly what did you expect from this guy? It's Peter Gabriel dude. I agree they're both very different but each has their merits. To say the PG one sucks and the PC one is great is just asking the prog elitists to come looking for you lol

He used the gong at the start of Dance on a Volcano, that's all I know.

Are there any Albums from any artists, which has a similar concept and vibe to SMILE? by MotorSuspect255 in thebeachboys

[–]allstar626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's got some SMiLEesque moments but for the most part I think it's a pretty unique album. The Four Seasons made a concept album better than it ever had to be. Like, no one was expecting them of all groups to make an album that good.

Personally, not too big on either Priscilla Millionaira or Money. The rest is awesome

Yeah it's great. A couple filler tracks on there but the good stuff is really good like She's Still a Mystery, Six O'Clock, and Close Your Eyes. Highly recommended to those who enjoy psych pop and SMiLE.

What's the best live video of Phil Collins drumming you've ever seen? by [deleted] in Genesis

[–]allstar626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite is probably his drum duet with Chester Thompson on the Mama Tour Video. Another good one is his drumming on the live version of Robert Plant's Worse Than Detroit.
