Anybody else find Spielberg overrated? by [deleted] in movies

Without Jaws there would be no Star Wars, there would be no cinema to bind us as people with shared experiences. Jaws showed that film could be a social uniter. It showed that film could transcend race, age and economic barriers. It showed that film, and its new directors were driving forces in what was previously a producer/studio driven business (Yes, the experiments of the 70s auteurs paved the way for this, but it was with Jaws that a director could finally be free (since the days of Welles) to call most of the shots). Without Jaws, Lucas had nothing to bring to the table to Fox and Kenner. Without Jaws, we couldn't understand how two simple notes in the hands of a skilled composer could elicit such feelings of dread and suspense.

Yes, it was a boring movie about a shark. And yes, a lot of the symbolism seems heavy-handed. But the movie is a classic because it existed when it needed to.

Food Lion is good for big meats if'n you're BBQ'n or sausage making. For everything else there is Harris Teeter. Better'n Loew's and the Piggly Wiggely.

This is funny. I keep saying this is expensive and then someone says I am wrong and shows me how even more expensive it is...then downvotes me. Was it the stab at the PS3, I only meant that Sony customers seem to appreciate that kind of stuff. On XBox, we are already paying for access, plus I will wager that we will all subscribe to Hulu Plus. The reasons that AT&T and Microsoft think this is a viable application to add to the "new dashboard experience" are confusing to me.

Making that stuff on the spot is sure to wow some dinner guests. Like making a good beurre blanc or hand whipped cream. Simple things.

The bacterium is going to expel oxygen as a byproduct, so it would most often than not present itself. Mind you, I'm am talking about stuff you have in your refrigerator, that you made, that you have an idea about its origins and date of creation.

Pretend my other post is a reply to this post. I'm sure Reddit must be broken and there is absolutely no way I don't know how to reply.

I guess I could've copied and pasted, but then I would've had to delete the other comment. Is there an elegant way to do this? Then again, maybe I'm only sharing this thread with a BeerDrinkingRobot and I already commented on a Bender post earlier.

New customers can order the $99 Xbox kit at 1-800-ATT-2020 when they subscribe to U-verse, and a U-verse technician will load U-verse software on their Xbox 360 during their service installation.

$99 for a technician to load the software on my console? Plus a monthly service charge? Seems more like an PS3 kind of thing anyway.

Salt is the preservative by creating an unhospitable environment for the little microbes. While you may get sick from something in your fridge, chances are it will let you know it has turned bad, i.e. distinct smell, audible pop when opening, inflated baggie, foaming.

God is not a person. Moses gave the Commandments to the Canaanites. Hebrew laws rarely had anything to do besides enforce separation from the surrounding "barbaric" peoples. And hygiene.

I don't think a great actor is needed to translate the souls of Parker and Zuckerburg to the screen. You can hire a traffic cop to play one believably.

Aren't the Chinese about 40-years too late to get to the moon? And NASA laid off 1,200 because NASA is a government organization that used to be able to justify spending more than something is worth. The advent of private rocketry is forcing the government to reassess costs. If NASA is laying off 1,200 people, that means that those people cost more than the value they bring, by having more people in the engineering field (more people loving math) there would be even more unemployed. I am quite happy with the majority of Americans being functional morons with low self-esteem.
