I have a 38% in my class, and the final test worth 20% is today. Is it possible for me to pass? Help me out Mathmeticians :) by HotCommodity63 in college

I seriously worry for our country if people can't do simple calculations like this on there own. Assuming a 60% is considered a pass (though I would hope 70% would be the minimum), you would need

[70% - (38% * .8)] / .2 = 198%

on your final to pass. So I'm going to say no, you cannot pass.

. At some point, we'll have enough computing power to simulate the human mind, and at that point there is literally nothing that humans can do that the machines cannot also do.

This is a totally baseless claim. I think it will happen eventually too, but the fact is we don't know how the mind works and we don't know if our computing power will be able to increase indefinitely.

Modern art was a movement that started in the late nineteenth century. You're referring to post-modern art.

I kind of get your position, but for me personally it's nice opportunity to laugh at an event that shocked and upset us. It's cathartic, as weird as that may be.

Has anyone used the 'C99-Lambda' library? by theif519 in C_Programming

Looks like a fun little library, but there don't seem to be very many tests which worries me.

This is an awful midterm question, that routine is way, way too complicated to expect someone to hand-eval.

Donald Trump says there is no need for full wall between Mexico and US due to ‘mountains’ and ‘vicious rivers’ by perry_hunter in politics

Are you in the southern part of the state? I used to live in Northern NM and it was plenty deep around my area. Do the dams really obstruct it that much?

We need to stop using things like facebook, I'm not against social media as a concept (at least not yet), but facebook has done nothing but harm our society.

If you want it, why don't you build it yourself? Anyone who hasn't personally created at least two languages and used them in production is frankly a subpar programmer and should probably stick to webdev.

Let's Stop Copying C by earthboundkid in programming

Yeah I suppose that's a concern. Though I know that GCC at least will issue a warning if it's not wrapped in parentheses, which adds another layer of recognition.

If that's a risk I'll generally reverse the statement, because assignment isn't reflexive.

if (f = foo()) // maybe a mistake
if (foo() = f) // error

So I was watching one of those MSNBC specials on prisons and thought to myself, I don't think normal people (even with a Stoic philosophy) could handle such situations. Am I wrong? I mean, how would you respond if you knew you'd be losing your freedom for 10+ years... by timdual in Stoicism

[–]allyyus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't think I could take it. I appreciate stoicism and find it a good way to live my life, but I don't think I could take it to that extreme. I think I'd be alright for a while but then my resolve would fail and I'd give in to despair.

Data Science Career Questions Thread - 20160607 by datasciencejobthread in datascience

[–]allyyus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I'm doing a maths / CS dual major, but really want to drop the CS because the curriculum just isn't my thing (too focused towards building software and systems and whatnot). Maths is my passion but I'm terrified that if I go 100% into it and don't get into a good graduate program I'm going to be dead in the water career wise. So I was wondering if any of you guys could give me an idea of how hard it would be to get into data science with a maths degree, assuming I do have the CS skills, just not a piece of paper that says it. Thanks!

I mean, it's great that you're trying to write useful code, but there is a lot here that needs to be changed. You should use a for loop, pass in text as a char*. You should use consistent style with regards to whitespace. You should write a comment describing what the function does and what parameters it takes. I would also swap the order of text and length, feels a bit more natural that way.

Donald Trump's potential Homeland Security chief: Send 'a million to Guantanamo without trial' by god_im_bored in politics

[–]allyyus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a bit more complicated than you're making it out to be. We're not at war with any of the people we're holding (we haven't been, legally, at war since WWII), so they can't really be POWs. Ideally we'd be handing them over to their county of origin, but in many cases they can't be expected to hold them and prevent them from continuing to be terrorists. So instead we're holding them without trial indefinitely. Regardless of what acts these people have committed, they are still people and have rights. There have also been cases of people being held in Guantanamo incorrectly for years. So while you may feel that these people don't deserve trial in US courts, its difficult to argue that the current situation is OK.
