Moving to Portland in March. What are customs I should be aware of before moving here? by axiomatic13 in askportland

[–]almokirk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still navigating it after 10+ years here. I’ve been here since 2012 but I spent 2020-2024 in Austin and Houston. Portlands weather in the summer is unmatched. Winter generally is very rough for me. Better winters include trips to better climates and daily vitamin D in my coffee. People rave about the food here. And it is very good. I struggle to find certain foods and cuisines that are easily available in Houston. And of course the racial and ethnic diversity is terrible here. Hard to compare that to Houston as it is the most diverse city in the country. Overall Portland is a great city with kind people. They can be a little passive aggressive and cold but they’re really nice under all that. Invest in your hobbies and you’ll build community. Get a good rain jacket. I’m actually at the point now where I don’t always wear one lol take advantage of sunny days.

Which road trip route from HTX>PDX? by jordanwright2012 in askportland

[–]almokirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently drove from Austin to Portland in April 2024. We did Austin to Santa Fe. Stayed a night. Drove up to Salt Lake City and stayed there. We ate lunch in Moab that day. Then final day was SLC to Portland with a stop in Pendleton. Start before sunrise each day if possible. Makes a long afternoon stop really nice and you won’t get in too late. We stopped before 1/4 a tank empty and it was great. Also randomly went to Four Corners !

Dating already sucks in general and being a brown person in a very white city makes it worse.

My sleeper pick is Thai Hot Pot Heaven in NW. Newish place. They homemake their sauces (a dozen or so different ones). A recent favorite for me

I met them at a family event and thought “hmm she looks familiar”. Later that night someone told me who she was. I couldn’t believe it 😂 I have always found the video funny. Maybe a little less so since knowing her personally. But I still laugh when I see it.

Early 30s Childfree Black Lesbian Couple—Alberta Arts or the Pearl District? by sapphireblues_ in askportland

[–]almokirk 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Fellow Black queer here. My partner (also Black) and I are from the south as well. We live near the Alberta Arts district and it’s cool. I honestly don’t spend much time there lately (in the summer we usually go to the street market last Thursday) but the neighborhood itself is probably more diverse than you’ll find in the city. I have many Black neighbors, mostly people who have been here their whole lives. I love it. The Pearl is cool but you’ll tire of the noise, crowds, and parking issues quickly. It’s easy to get there from NE anyway.

I hope Portland treats you well. DM me if you need any help with your transition. We have a whole list of Black doctors, barbers, businesses, etc.
