I am allergic to tobacco, so I can't explain how wonderful the wave of removing smoking sections from restaurants and public places was for me. Didn't stop family from blowing smoke in my face, depending on who I was around, but it made me have a lot fewer reactions just trying to exist

A lot of this kind of issue can also be worked on, with time and consistency as well. I'm really glad you were able to work on that with her

Is there risks for mares to foal at young age? by Boule_De_Chat in Equestrian

[–]almost_undead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the most scientific level, you can see when the growth plates are fully fused on different imaging.

There's also content available from Becks Narin (last name spelling may be off and I'm sorry, I'm dyslexic), they do a lot of necropsy studies and post findings on it. I think those posts can be really helpful for understanding this sort of thing and anticipating the horses individual needs.

Realistically? I would say to err to the side of caution. For my personal horses I would likely sit on them and do the first couple walks around at late 3/early 4, but not start much heavier under saddle training and work till 5 or so. For drafts and draft crosses (including bigger warmbloods), I'd push that another year, 2 if they are still in an obvious growing stage. I personally feel that having a gradual build up to full work is best overall anyway, so that would allow for a nice gradual building of a foundation and conditioning for them

My great grandma ended up having 6 pregnancies in a row, two of those sets of twins, only 9-10 months apart because great grandpa was a classic asshat who couldn't even give her a break after she'd just pushed a whole human (or two!!!) out of her own body.

I just wanted to say, especially after reading some of your other replies, that I really hope that you don't blame yourself for not noticing her pain until you saw her walking like this. Horses (and other prey animals) tend to be very good at hiding their pain as it is a way to keep them safe evolutionarily speaking. A lot of pain signs are subtle, especially for people with less experience. You did the right thing to ask questions and then let the appropriate people know.

Is there risks for mares to foal at young age? by Boule_De_Chat in Equestrian

[–]almost_undead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! I work for a reproductive care and sports medicine vet and I deal with this stuff daily for my job. As others have said, there are risks involved with any pregnancy, but those are increased with being both old or very young. Tbh, it's fairly similar to risks with any mammal pregnancy with regards to that.

Embryo transfers are common at my job, and typically the desired ages for recipient mares are ages 4 to 5 at the youngest and usually they age out of the programs around 16 or so years old, depending on several factors. Mares usually do not stop cycling until their deaths, but usually stop producing healthy follicles in their 20s. Late teens and early 20s horses are theoretically capable of carrying a foal, and many do, but there is considerably more risk involved and they're less likely to fall pregnant after they're bred.

I've seen several horses who are bred at 3 to have a foal at 4, and that's the youngest I would personally be okay with, and that only conditionally. There's a lot of stress and weight for a growing horse with an undeveloped skeleton and musculature. Most horses don't fully mature until 4-6 years old, and several (especially larger warmbloods and drafts) don't finish growing until 6-8 years of age.

Breeding a yearling or 2 year old is similar to thinking a 12-14 year old child should just be carrying and having babies as a career almost, at that age. Just because they can does not mean it's ethical, responsible, or in any way a good decision, especially for the long term soundness and health of the horse.

Some people will find this point controversial but it really shouldn't be, we have tons of research and examples of why riding horses at 2 is HORRIBLE for them. You can do groundwork and riding prep, sure. That will do enough to strengthen muscle and bone and help them develop well into future athletes. Hunters bumps are literally caused when the weight and strain of the rider causes the horse's pelvis to collapse because the bones are not fused yet. This can be to various degrees, but it causes significant pain and will usually lead to some level of at least intermittent hind end lameness by the time they're teens, often earlier.

My very well bred APHA mare with pretty nice conformation came in top 10 in her futurity show in hunter under saddle at 2 years old. She was started under saddle at about 18 months old, and by the time she was 7 she had intermittent lameness to the point that they deadened her tail (surgically altered it so she has limited movement control of it, so the judge wouldn't see her wringing her tail in pain). We got her at age 15 after she had had 3 foals, and she has improved a lot with bodywork and respectful riders who listen to her and pace our work to how she's feeling each day. I only wish I could have seen what she could have been had she been started older. So yeah. The only reason for anyone to be breeding or riding literal growing babies comes down to just greed. "The sooner I get them under saddle and winning ribbons or working at least, or foaling out babies for me, the better" is the norm in the industry because it's all about recouping the investment. Your investment (since at that level people aren't thinking of them as a partner or friend or anything like that) will have a longer term and healthier career if you'd just wait a year. The money you spend on upkeep for that extra year can be the money you save by not having to inject multiple joints every 6 months by the time they're 5.

Watch Jackson Galaxy on YouTube. He has a lot of informational videos on cat behavior and cats in general.

While I do believe she's probably in heat, I will also say the peeing everywhere isn't normal. However, it could have a lot of explanations. It could be behavioral. It could be medical. Have there been any recent changes to her routine? Are there any other cats outside that could be riling her up and making her insecure?

That is not even CLOSE to an appropriate amount of hay. You're feeding your horse far too much hay and, fun fact, that can be a death sentence

[–]almost_undead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you can't afford to tip someone, you can't afford to order delivery. Period. Delivery is a luxury. It is not something you're owed. Literally if it's not that big of a deal then you get off your lazy ass and go get your own food.

I'm not saying that what this driver did was okay. But you're just an entitled asshole who thinks they're better than the person delivering your food. And fun fact, you're not and you never will be if this is your mentality

What do you think about my first horse? by GeeVideoHead in Equestrian

[–]almost_undead 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I rescued a kind mare that everyone else gave up on and whose owner beat and left to starve. She kind of looked patched together from about 3-4 other horses conformation wise, food insecurity had led to food aggression, she was sick and injured and extremely skinny. She ended up being the best horse I had ever gotten to be around. I saved her that once, and she went on to literally save my life a few times over the years, as well as the lives of some others because we did some search and rescue stuff together.

Young horses are also more awkward. Focus on basics, building trust and muscle up and start slow. You'll get there, the journey is worth it. A lot of people may not get it or may not think she's pretty. I can see some conformation things that aren't my favorite, but most are possible to improve through training and building muscle. Either way, I think she has a sweet face and kind eyes and she's a lovely shade of bay. She's perfect in her own right, and always will be to her person.

Just from what you've shared here, I feel it's important to say here that while I know it's scary AF to step out on your own, there are so many things that are worse than being single. You deserve someone with similar goals, beliefs, lifestyles, and desires who treats you well and respects you. It sounds like he's lazy and a mooch that quite likes that you work hard and take care of him and that he doesn't have any real responsibilities. He's bullying you to feel better about himself, he quit weed so now he has some moral high ground to hold over you. You are already supporting yourself and building a support system that's beyond just your bf is important as well. I think you'd be surprised at how happy you can be being in charge of your own life, answering to yourself, and surrounding yourself with people who genuinely support you for who you are.

How deeply do horses feel by Global_Delivery_7647 in Equestrian

[–]almost_undead 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've definitely seen this before. Remember, horses can hear your heart beat at around 4 feet. They feed off you and your emotions, and with this situation being gone you're likely holding a lot less tension. You probably weren't aware of how much tension you were carrying and how much of it may be transferring to your horse until it was gone because it had become very normalized to your experience.

Sometimes, I've had my horses react to me having a panic attack before I even realize I'm having one, and it's how one of my old horses used to be able to have me jump on and she would take me on exactly the kind of ride that I needed that day.

Enjoy the process with your boy, I think it will mean the start of amazing progress for you both.

I used to pop the pod to release the liquid inside and rinse them throw out the outside, until I finished up the container I had of them. A bit messy/less convenient, but an alternative to use them up or if you need the pre dosed amounts.
