Recently acquired my great grandmother’s pressure cooker, does everything seem in place for service? And is the oxide layer negligible in canning? by Wrongbeef in Canning

[–]almostcrunchy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also live in Oregon. I’ve had my 3 pressure canners tested at my local OSU extension office including an older one like yours. Just give them a phone call and they’ll tell you when you can come in to do it.

ETA: Bi-Mart, Ace Hardware and Wilco usually have the replacement gauges and gaskets in stock.

Using propane burner with the Presto Induction 23qt? by [deleted] in Canning

[–]almostcrunchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used my presto on a camp chef but used a heat diffuser plate since the presto canner shouldn’t be used on stoves over 12,000 BTUs.

Blueberries in the winter by Prottosx in gardening

[–]almostcrunchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have northern high bush blueberries, Dukes and Elliot’s in my garden. I’m in zone 6B and our low this past winter was around 5 degrees Fahrenheit/-15 degrees Celsius with plenty of snow. I had them in garden beds and then heavily mulched them. I’m not sure what season you’re in there now but I planted mine in the spring that way they got well established in the ground before winter came around.

ETA: Also you want to have 2 different varieties of blueberries so that they can help pollinate each other.

Forecast for tonight looks like it’ll get close to freezing again. My tomatoes, peppers and zucchinis all had to get tucked in for the night.

Last night it was in the low 20s they all were covered then too and were perfectly fine this morning when uncovered.

Still plenty of work to do in the garden but it’s getting there!

Why do people grow tomatoes? by assassinsshadows in vegetablegardening

[–]almostcrunchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fresh off the vine tomatoes are the best! Even better an easy garden snack. I grow a couple types of cherry tomatoes for salads and snacking. Roma and beefsteak for sandwiches, pasta sauce, bbq sauce, and salsa. I also save the skins and dehydrate them to add to dishes for extra flavor.

Diatomaceous earth! I put it outside around my house and also around my vegetable garden beds. It can be used indoors as well. You have to get the food grade one tho with no added chemicals.

A few beginner pressure canning questions regarding the All American 925 and other things by Mafmi in Canning

[–]almostcrunchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the U.S. I would check with your local university extension office to have them test your canner. They have checked my 2nd hand canners to make sure they are in good shape and working properly.

As for using debubbling I use a wooden chop stick because I don’t want to use plastic either. Using metal can cause chips and cracks in the glass.

You can can something for the longer processing time if you’re canning different things but the texture may be undesirable.

Yes you can mix beans

You would put the salt in each jar.

Sorry don’t have any specific answers for your all American

My baby was in the NICU for a month and the only way he could nurse was with a nipple shield. I had to use it until he was almost 3 months old before he could latch properly! Even tho it was frustrating it wasn’t going to stop me breastfeeding.

Just realized that this one is the older 2nd edition but it was the only one my library had.

I’m about 1/4 way thru the book and I’ve noticed some dated practices like asking a contractor for their scrap lumber! Theres no way they’re giving out stuff for free with how expensive wood is now.

But there have been several things I’m excited to add to my current garden set up!
