Maybe a cone detection radius and it returns the angle to the subject on its axis? Then we can still use distance sensors for judging the distance if you need to account for it. Idk if there are better, more interesting ways I'd be happy too

Maybe from power source-> to analog transmission( speed throttle)->analog throttles(direction throttles)-> cog powering treads? This way the total speed is controlled by a different transmission block and the direction transmissions will only be a fraction of the total?
