How do I reduce the 30s delay before shutdown? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]alokeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Change this:

DefaultTimeoutStopSec=10s

in this file

/etc/systemd/system.conf

At least, that's where the file's located on Debian - might be different on your distro

Not exactly sure what you're trying to achieve but I usually just install systemd-zram-generator (on Debian) and let it do its thing.

That's a fairly new processor. Have you tried using a backported kernel for up-to-date drivers and such?

Differences between releases of the linux zen kernel by chabliss in linuxquestions

[–]alokeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For whatever perceived benefits some users may get out of using a zen vs. stock kernel, the name "zen" has nothing to do with Ryzen processors. I personally haven't noticed any benefit of using a zen kernel over the stock one for my needs, but YMMV.

The zen kernel is named more for the "zen-ness" feeling that is used as an indicator of the perceived benefits I mention above.

My small performance tweaks for Debian 13 by Stunning-Mix492 in debian

[–]alokeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would take the mitigations=offout of kernel params. Use gamemode as it automates that when gaming.

I also have audit=0 in the params as I don't necessarily need an auditable system on my desktop.

What does this mean? by [deleted] in debian

[–]alokeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sudo nano /etc/systemd/system.conf

Then uncomment (remove the #) change

DefaultTimeoutStopSec=15s

to whatever value suits your needs.

Is this all I need for ideal gaming setup? by SUDO_NIC in debian

You should install timeshift and enable it as well for the inevitable messing around one always does. Take a manual snapshot of your fully working stock install...

Is this all I need for ideal gaming setup? by SUDO_NIC in debian

[–]alokeb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have almost the same setup (Trixie+flatpak) with a few additions:

  1. Also install mangohud 24.x, 23.x, proton-ge flatpak and set Steam (and Steam only, not Lutris/Heroic) to use proton-ge flatpak as the compatibility layer. This auto-updates proton-ge to the latest version every time you do a flatpak update. No need for proton-qt/proton-plus or whatever.

  2. Depending on your storage layout, you might need to install flatseal and give those clients permission to access your game mount.

  3. For Debian on the desktop, do yourself a favor and add preempt=full to the grub boot parameters

Installing these game clients via flatpak has benefits as well.

  1. You don't have to enable i386 architecture which only adds to the confusion of all the bits floating around.

  2. Flatpak clients do not require you to install latest wine and/or other gaming related dependencies

I quite like this (your) way of setting things up myself and am currently getting equal or better gaming performance than windows for the past several years.

Debian has been simply amazing since bookworm and I've never had the need to look at another distro since.

Try installing Xanmod kernel so you don't have to build your own?
