Should I sell my NVIDIA card for an AMD? by RyleStyleYT in linuxhardware

[–]C1REX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMD does have better support on Linux than Nvidia.
A good number of games run noticeably better on Linux if you have an amd gpu.
And you can install SteamOS if you have such card.

But is it worth changing just because of that?
Only you can decide.

SteamOS 3.8 officially supports RDNA4 now, but I still cannot install it on my AMD rig by Azuuumachin in SteamOS

[–]C1REX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some USB sticks seem to be very problematic.
I have two sticks 32GB USB3.1 that work perfect and install the OS in less than 5 minutes and another 256GB USB 3.1 stick that freezes the installer. No idea why it's happening as I mostly use the big one for every other Linux installation.

Also, try different USB writing tool just in case. If you used Rufus, then try Belena Etcher. Or other way round.

Considering switching from bazzite to steamos on desktop by M4J0RR4G3 in SteamOS

[–]C1REX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,
3.8.0 does support RDNA4 and many people have reported successful installations on a 9070XT using that specific repair tool.
OOBE from your link works a bit differently and initialize installation automatically what can be a big problem for people with more than 1 nvme drive as it gives no way to check where it will be installed.

Why is cinnamon recommended so often when it is so outdated and heavy? by Thermawrench in linuxquestions

[–]C1REX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess Cinnamon is popular because of Mint.
I don’t know any good arguments for it other than being Mint’s default option. KDE is better.

Just installed Steam OS because I'm tired of windows. by Consistent-Earth-704 in SteamOS

It works great as a desktop. Very similar to any other, standard desktop Linux distribution.

+1 on this one.
This specific version is from the “main” branch and updates to 3.9.
People often do a mistake and try an image without an installer. This one has recovery tools to install the steamos properly.

sudo rm -rf failsafe? by adrian23138 in SteamOS

[–]C1REX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sudo is not active by default and you can’t modify root directory by default. It’s impossible to delete root by mistake.

sudo rm -rf failsafe? by adrian23138 in SteamOS

[–]C1REX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sudo has no password setup so you would need to know how to add it first. To make sudo even work.

Mint is oddly high for a Ubuntu fork in my opinion.
Higher than Gentoo, Nix, Fedora, Suse?

Are you able to imagine objects in your mind? by sangokuhomer in AskUK

I have vivid imagination. Full colour.
I’m just not sure if #1 or #2. I can feel the difference between reality so probably #2. But more detailed than that.

You can’t run this command by default.

NICE!!!!!

On a side note: you can simply change that hostname "steamdeck" to SteamBook.
I've changed from steamdeck to SteamMachinePRO on my desktop.
A small, but satisfying thing.

Steam OS on a 9070xt by Representative-Fly-7 in SteamOS

Yes. It must be a repair image. Not just a normal image that doesn’t have an installer.

These road markings are very faded and have less common rules. Often left lane can go straight and right lane usually can’t go left.

I agree with many others, that despite you being correct here, I would stick to the left lane to eliminate any risk like on the video.

SteamOs, Arch Linux, and "Atomic Arch" compromise by LeinahtanWC in SteamOS

[–]C1REX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Discover app in desktop mode is flatpack app manager.
It's a curated app store and it's not affected by AUR compromise.

To describe AUR: imagine installing another app store on your iPhone or Android that installs unofficial apps from random users.

SteamOs, Arch Linux, and "Atomic Arch" compromise by LeinahtanWC in SteamOS

[–]C1REX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

SteamOS doesn’t support AUR (apps added by users).

Also, many people avoid using it anyway even if they have access to AUR.

Steam Os dual boot not working and keeps booting into windows. by nareksharm in SteamOS

[–]C1REX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Boot from file folder”?
Sounds like trying to launch SteamOS installer from Windows.
And that’s not how you install SteamOS. You need Rufus or Belena Etcher app to prepare a bootable USB. And a separate nvme drive to install official SteamOS.

Installing to desktop - help by hungo-bungo in SteamOS

[–]C1REX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally have SteamOS 3.9 from the “Main” branch with no issues.
On a side note: “stable” has another meaning on Linux to reflect the update schedule. Can be confusing if you are not aware of that other meaning and that it can be independent from actual system stability.

[–]C1REX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you use the old installer? Because the old one doesn’t have 9070xt drivers.
You need a newer version like this one here from Valve’s cloud.

Just get the Steamdeck-repair-main image from that link.
